Rivian controller Jon Franklin exits after CFO Claire McDonough's departure to GE Vernova

Rivian Automotive's corporate controller Jon Franklin is leaving the electric vehicle maker, following the departure of long-time CFO Claire McDonough. McDonough announced in August she would step down on 30 October to become CFO of GE Vernova after nearly six years at Rivian. Franklin, who spent four and a half years with the company, announced his exit on LinkedIn but did not disclose his next position. Derek Mulvey, vice president of finance, has been appointed interim CFO whilst the company searches for a permanent replacement. The departures come as Rivian struggles to achieve profitability whilst ramping up vehicle deliveries. Morningstar forecasts the company will not reach companywide operating profits until 2030.

Rivian sends safety message to thousands of drivers.

Rivian sends safety message to thousands of drivers. Rivian Automotive announced a recall affecting approximately 100,700 vehicles due to a software issue that may obstruct the rearview camera image when drivers reverse. This recall encompasses a majority of Rivian's vehicles produced since August 2021. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) had mandated backup cameras for most new vehicles starting in May 2018, due to the high incidence of backover accidents, which claim nearly 210 lives annually. The specific glitch occurs when a stability control prompt inadvertently hides the camera view, although the image is restored once the car is in motion. Rivian clarified that it is not aware of any incidents or injuries linked to this issue. Notably, over 95% of the affected vehicles already include a software fix. The company advises owners to update their systems over-the-air and check their vehicle identification number on the recall page. Notification letters to owners are expected to be sent by November 9. This recall marks Rivian's fourth since January but is considered less severe due to the pre-existing fix. Rivian's vehicles have transitioned to a software-focused model, where recalls may reflect coding issues rather than physical component failures. As the automotive industry leans more towards software-based solutions, recall numbers may increase, even as repair costs diminish. Rivian's shares have experienced fluctuations, trading below their IPO price, and analysts hold a cautious outlook with an average price target suggesting slight growth potential. The company remains focused on achieving its target of 65,000 to 70,000 vehicle deliveries this year. Why this story matters: The recall highlights the challenges automotive manufacturers face in ensuring safety compliance while transitioning to software-defined vehicles. Key takeaway: The majority of recalled vehicles already have the necessary software update, indicating effective preemptive measures by Rivian. Opposing viewpoint: Skeptics may argue that relying on software updates for compliance can mask deeper quality control issues within new vehicle production.

Honeywell Aerospace sues Rivian over vehicle patents: Bloomberg Law.

Honeywell Aerospace sues Rivian over vehicle patents: Bloomberg Law. Torrance-based firm accuses EV maker of patent infringement for seven technologies September 23, 2026 Irvine-based Rivian Automotive Inc. is being sued by Torrance-based Honeywell Aerospace over the allegedly unpermitted use of seven patented vehicle technologies in federal court in Arizona, Bloomberg Law reported. Honeywell, which launched as an independent firm this year, filed the case for patent infringement on Sept. 18. Rivian has not responded to a request for comment. The suit says the patents include vehicle safety monitoring, traffic display systems, autonomous navigation, sensor fusion displays, laser-based navigation, hazard detection, and software licensing management, according to Bloomberg. Honeywell is requesting monetary damages, an injunction, attorneys' fees, enhanced damages for willful infringement and a jury trial, alleging that its aerospace technology can be applied to ground vehicles also. Shares of Rivian were down 1.5% to $14.91 apiece during midday trading, with a $22 billion market cap (Nasdaq: RIVN). Want more from the best local business newspaper in the country? Rivian recalling nearly 100K vehicles over rearview camera problem.

Rivian recalling nearly 100K vehicles over rearview camera problem. Published September 23, 2026 9:31 AM CDT The Rivian R1S is one of the vehicles under a recall because of a problem with the rearview camera. (Rivian) The brief. * * Rivian is recalling 98,828 SUVs and trucks because of a software issue that could affect rearview camera visibility. * The recall affects certain 2022-2026 R1T trucks, 2022-2027 R1S SUVs and 2027 R2 SUVs. * A software update that solves the problem is available for free for owners to install over-the-air. Rivian Automotive says it is recalling almost 100,000 trucks and SUVs from model years 2022 through 2027 over a problem that affects vehicle rearview cameras. The company said on its website that the recall affects 2022-2026 R1T trucks, 2022-2027 R1S SUVs and 2027 R2 SUVs. What we know: On certain R1T, R1S and R2 vehicles, the notice states, a safety alert prompt on the center display may overlap the rearview camera when the vehicle is placed in reverse "in rare instances." The company says the issue could occur while stability control is off and after returning to the vehicle. Why you should care: Because the rearview image may be obstructed by a notification before the vehicle moves, it may not meet federal safety regulations governing rear visibility. What they're saying: The company said it is not aware of any customer reports, accidents, injuries or fatalities related to the problem. What you can do: Rivian says a software update to solve the problem is available for all potentially affected vehicles at no cost. It estimates that more than 95% of vehicles affected have already installed the update. Rivian is encouraging all of its owners to update their vehicle over-the-air to install the latest available software if they have not already done so. Anyone with questions about the recall should call Rivian Service Support at 855-748-4265. Further information is available on the Rivian website.
