Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree or equivalent in journalism or a related field.
  • At least 8 years of relevant experience reporting for radio, television, or online media.
  • Deep expertise in D.C. and surrounding-region politics, with an extensive network of political sources.
  • Strong critical thinking skills and the ability to analyze and contextualize complex political narratives.
  • Strong editorial judgment and the ability to write quickly, clearly, and in a distinctive and appealing style.
  • Effective and imaginative storytelling skills across audio and digital mediums.
  • Strong writing and reporting skills.
  • An established reputation for covering politics in D.C. and the region.
  • Ability to shift between writing radio scripts, online news articles, explainers, and short and longer pieces.
  • Sharp interview skills and strong journalistic ethics.
  • Experience building audience connections using social media and using platforms to develop story ideas, angles, and sources.
  • Hands-on audio and digital editing skills.
  • Deep knowledge of the D.C. region, particularly local politics.
  • Successful completion of a background check.
  • Ability to work from the District of Columbia, Maryland, or Virginia, or perform work on-site at the university.
Responsibilities
  • Develop sources and deepen and shape coverage for assigned beats in consultation with newsroom editors.
  • Report narrative-driven, sound-rich breaking news, day-turn stories, explainers, two-ways, features, and enterprise work for audio and the web.
  • Lead coverage of the mayor, D.C. Council, and other local institutions shaping life in the city.
  • Occasionally assist with coverage and projects about politics beyond the District.
  • Maintain regular breaking-news shifts.
  • Evaluate leads, monitor major news developments, contribute story ideas, and receive assignments from an editor.
  • Determine a web or broadcast story's emphasis, length, and format and organize material accordingly.
  • Report at a desk and in the field and collaborate with other reporters as needed.
  • Write 3–5 broadcast/newscast and web pieces per week and regularly contribute features and enterprise work.
  • Cover at least one breaking-news shift per week.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with credible information sources.
  • Serve as the primary backup host and editor for the weekly Politics Hour program.
  • Help edit stories or fill in for editors' shifts when needed.
  • Lead coverage initiatives, particularly those related to regional politics.
  • Produce web stories in the station's content management system, including finding images, writing headlines with an editor's help, and performing search engine optimization work.
  • Write tweets and Facebook posts for stories as needed.
  • Produce audio using field sound and appropriate sound bites to create a sense of place and a holistic portrait.
  • Engage with reader questions and feedback across platforms, including social media, when necessary and as time allows.
  • Participate in internal and external events as a station representative and subject matter expert.
