Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Ability to read, write, and speak fluent English.
  • One year of food service and/or patient care experience including direct customer service experience and demonstrated customer service skills.
  • Oregon Food Handlers Card.
  • Ability to continuously move about the work area, stand for eight hours per day, bend, stoop, reach overhead, and push or pull carts up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to lift, push, and carry items up to 50 pounds unassisted.
  • Clear and audible speaking voice and correctable vision to size 12 type.
  • Ability to hear normal speech level.
Responsibilities
  • Provide direct patient care for meal service, including providing menus, taking meal orders with a portable electronic device, confirming orders against prescribed diets, checking medical records for CBG orders or medications timed with food intake, assembling meals, delivering meals, clearing over-bed tables, and ensuring patients are ready for meals.
  • Check tray accuracy during delivery and identify items left on trays, such as glasses, dentures, and paperwork.
  • Deliver ice and water as requested by patients or registered nurses.
  • Reheat or store food from patient meal trays according to food safety protocols.
  • Remove soiled meal trays from patient rooms and document intake in the medical record.
  • Order products and maintain nourishment-room inventory using first-in, first-out procedures.
  • Use two patient identifiers and hand sanitizer between patient contacts.
  • Recognize and respond to emergent situations.
  • Document patient intakes and calorie-count data in Epic and convert weights and measures for food items used in calorie-count data.
  • Coordinate care and services with team members, alert dietitians and dietetic technicians to patient needs, and arrange snacks as appropriate.
  • Notify nursing and other professional staff of patient needs outside the Meal Service Associate scope of practice.
  • Reinforce nutritional teaching and counseling that supports or restores health.
  • Follow established skills, protocols, policies, procedures, rules, regulations, HIPAA and confidentiality guidelines, the OHSU Code of Conduct, and applicable compliance responsibilities.
  • Carry out job responsibilities ethically, effectively, and professionally; report potential compliance problems; model ethical behavior and personal integrity; and participate in required training programs.
  • Maintain professional development and knowledge of technology, new equipment, and hospital systems.
  • Incorporate quality-improvement practices and OHSU's mission and patient- and family-centered care principles into performance.
  • Promote service excellence and provide outstanding patient care, including immediate service recovery and responding to expressed and unspoken patient needs.
  • Complete patient surveys as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • One year of hospitality experience in a fast-paced hospital food-service environment.
  • Experience communicating with patients, nursing staff, dietitians, dietetic technicians, and diet aides.
  • Completion of a vocational training program in a health-care support area, such as Certified Nursing Assistant.
  • CNA2 acute-care certification.
  • ServSafe certification.
