Requirements
  • The candidate must have 7+ years of journalism experience.

Responsibilities
  • Set the editorial vision of The Stranger, identify and own the stories that matter in Seattle, break stories, and cultivate the newsroom’s original reporting.
  • Manage the full lifecycle of the editorial team, from recruiting and hiring to coaching, performance conversations, and leadership decisions.
  • Develop strategies to reach new audiences and lead newsroom growth across web, print, newsletters, podcasts, video, and social media.
  • Develop and uphold a strong workplace culture with empathetic leadership, high journalistic integrity, and a commitment to engaging the Noisy Union.
  • Edit columns and features for the website and print paper, overseeing fact-checking, spelling, grammar, writing style, page design, and photo selection.
  • Hit production deadlines and goals for print and digital formats.
  • Partner with editors across the Noisy Creek publications in Chicago, Portland, and beyond.
  • Partner across Noisy Creek and with external community partners to identify opportunities and plan special issues and events.
Desired Qualifications
  • The candidate should have 3+ years of experience as an editor and manager.
  • Experience working with a variety of story formats and harnessing new technologies to tell stories in new ways is preferred.
  • The ability to manage budgets is preferred.

Noisy Creek buys and revitalizes local alt-weeklies to sustain neighborhood journalism. It keeps publications locally managed, provides capital and a stable business framework, and preserves editorial independence. Revenue comes from ads, subscriptions, philanthropy, and synergies from acquisitions, plus services like EverOut and Bold Type Tickets that share fees as advertising credit with partner venues. The goal is to build a decentralized network of independent, financially stable local papers.

Seattle-based Noisy Creek owns six publications nationwide, including Seattle's The Stranger, the Portland Mercury, the Chicago Reader and the Anchorage Press.
