UBS move could put up to 12,000 Swiss jobs at risk, union warns

The Swiss Bank Employees Association (SBPV) has warned that up to 12,000 UBS jobs in Switzerland could be affected if tougher capital requirements push the bank to move its headquarters. In a letter to the WAK commission, obtained by NZZ am Sonntag, the union called for a "viable compromise" on capital rules. It said a relocation could threaten 10,000 to 12,000 of the bank's 34,000 Swiss jobs, on top of cuts already under way as UBS integrates Credit Suisse. UBS has cut about 20,000 roles worldwide since the acquisition. Chief executive Sergio Ermotti has said the integration will bring around 3,000 redundancies in Switzerland, largely through natural attrition, early retirement, and internal transfers. The WAK is due to assess capital requirements for UBS's foreign subsidiaries. The upper house proposed last month that the bank back them with 90% Common Equity Tier 1 capital. UBS is weighing options, including moving its headquarters or merging with another lender.
