Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required for the Certified Medical Assistant I path.
  • Completion of an accredited medical assisting program is required for the Certified Medical Assistant I path.
  • Certification as a Certified Clinical Medical Assistant, Certified Medical Assistant, or equivalent through an approved certifying organization is required.
  • Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification or American Red Cross Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers certification is required.
  • Graduation from an accredited Practical Nurse program is required for the Licensed Practical Nurse I path.
  • An active Licensed Practical Nurse license in South Carolina or a compact state is required for the Licensed Practical Nurse I path.
  • The role requires the ability to stand, walk, sit, bend, kneel, climb stairs, reach in all directions, use both hands and legs, perform repetitive upper-extremity motions, and maintain finger dexterity.
  • The role requires physical qualification for respirator use, corrected 20/40 vision, and the ability to work in a latex-safe indoor environment.
  • The role requires the ability to frequently lift, lower, push, pull, or carry approximately 50 pounds unassisted and lift 25 pounds from 36 inches to overhead.
  • The role requires the ability to occasionally work in dusty areas and confined or cramped spaces.
Responsibilities
  • Provide quality patient care under the direction of a physician or licensed healthcare provider in a clinical practice.
  • Room patients, take vital signs and health histories, document in an electronic medical record, give injections, and assist with minor procedures.
  • Calibrate, clean, and perform scheduled maintenance of clinical and laboratory equipment in accordance with applicable requirements, documenting completion.
  • Maintain and review patient records, charts, and other pertinent information, and communicate information as appropriate.
  • Document test and examination results.
  • Communicate the plan of care to patients and develop patient education materials when necessary.
  • Maintain examination-room supplies, instruments, and cleanliness of the patient-care environment.
  • Maintain timely patient flow and assist with scheduling appointments and referrals based on urgency and availability.
  • Screen patients for appropriate information and provide patient education related to diagnosis and treatment.
  • Observe, record, and report patients' physical and psychosocial conditions and reactions to medications and treatments to the physician.
  • Respond to and triage telephone calls and call in physician orders appropriately.
  • Instruct patients regarding treatment and medication as ordered by the physician.
  • Monitor and distribute medications, including samples and controlled substances.
  • Triage patients and prepare them for physician examinations and procedures.
  • Assist with examinations, procedures, and treatments as necessary.
  • Instruct patients in the collection of samples and tests.
  • Administer prescribed treatments and tests as ordered by the physician.
Desired Qualifications
  • One year of patient care experience is preferred for the Certified Medical Assistant I path.
