COLUMBIA, S.C. - Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP is pleased to announce the addition of three attorneys to its growing national Tax Controversy and Litigation practice. Patrick McCann joins the firm as a partner in Atlanta; Eman Arabi-Katbi joins as counsel in Houston; and Andrew Mullendore joins as senior associate in Atlanta. "Tax controversy is a significant and growing need for our clients, particularly as businesses and individuals navigate increasingly complex federal and state tax issues," said Michael Hollingsworth, co-chair of the firm's Mergers & Acquisitions Group and Investment Management Group. "The addition of Patrick, Eman and Andrew expands our capabilities across the tax controversy lifecycle and brings together valuable perspectives from private practice, government and public accounting. McCann focuses his practice on representing taxpayers throughout the tax controversy lifecycle, including examinations, appeals, and litigation, and advises clients on federal tax planning and restructuring. His experience spans federal income and corporate income taxes, partnership and employment taxes, estate and gift tax matters, tax shelter penalties, and promoter examinations. He also represents small captive insurance companies that elect federal tax treatment under Section 831(b) and the businesses that utilize them. Arabi-Katbi joins Nelson Mullins from the Internal Revenue Service, where she served as Associate Area Counsel with the IRS Office of Chief Counsel. A licensed attorney and Certified Public Accountant (CPA), she brings experience in government, private practice, and public accounting to her tax controversy and litigation work. She advises individuals and businesses on tax matters including international tax, transfer pricing, estate planning, business transactions, tax compliance, and resolving tax obligations with federal and state taxing authorities. Her practice also includes business litigation and commercial contracts. Mullendore is a tax attorney and CPA who represents businesses, high-net-worth individuals, entities, and fiduciaries in complex federal and state tax matters. His experience spans Employee Retention Credits, micro-captive insurance, conservation easements, offshore reporting, cryptocurrency transactions, trust fund recovery penalties, IRS criminal investigations, and state and local tax controversies. "Bringing together attorneys with experience on different sides of the tax controversy process allows us to provide clients with a broader perspective and more comprehensive counsel," said Juan F. Vasquez, Jr., chair of the firm's Tax Practice Group and Tax Controversy Litigation Team. "Patrick, Eman, and Andrew each bring a distinct set of experiences and capabilities, and their additions strengthen our team's ability to handle complex matters involving federal, state, and local taxing authorities. We look forward to the contributions they will make to our clients and to the continued growth of our national Tax Controversy and Litigation practice." Legal AI giant Harvey picks London to lead pro bono push.

Legal AI giant Harvey picks London to lead pro bono push. News Reporter Legal AI firm Harvey has chosen London to launch a new product designed to help lawyers tackle pro bono work, as the US-headquartered start-up looks to accelerate its growth into new areas of the legal industry. The new pro bono offering, launched in London and available to Harvey's customers in the UK, US and Australia from Tuesday, will give law firms tools to help tackle the high volumes of free legal advice they offer across areas like housing support, veterans services and social welfare claims. Harvey has partnered with senior pro bono leaders from Ashurst Perkins Coie, DLA Piper and Nelson Mullins to launch the new initiative. Speaking with City AM, Harvey's chief operating officer, Katie Burke, said the company had chosen London as it was "an epicentre for the legal market". "So many of our customers are either based there or global multinational firms are conducting a ton of business there, so when we thought about where to put the responsible business programme, it made sense that it would be headquartered out of London," she said. "There's a lot more focus on how businesses should think about responsible AI, and so we want to be pioneering that conversation alongside our customers," Burke added. News updates. Stay ahead with our three daily briefings delivering all the key market moves, top business and political stories, and incisive analysis straight to your inbox. Founded in 2022, Harvey's first customer was City-based law firm, A&O Shearman. Burke said "our business would not exist fundamentally" without them. "It's grown significantly since then. Now we have hundreds of folks based in London. We've gotten so big, we're expanding out of our existing floor in King's Cross, which is a good sign," Burke said. The chief operating officer added that "it's telling that in the investment we're making we're headquartering both of those key initiatives out of London. And it's a testament to the quality of talent we see there, but also the demand from our customer base." Responsibility initiatives set Harvey apart. The legal tech market is a competitive landscape as Harvey jostles for market share with the likes of Legora and Clio. Telecoms giant Vodafone also pushed into the legal tech market in August after announcing it was co-developing a legal tech tool. However, Burke said the pro bono programme sets Harvey apart as it is important to their customers "from a business perspective, but also on the personal side of things." "In pretty much every customer meeting I've been in or every prospect customer meeting, we were hearing about the importance of this initiative," she told City AM.
