NextEra Energy owns Florida Power & Light, the regulated utility that supplies electricity to much of Florida, and NextEra Energy Resources, which builds and runs wind, solar, battery storage and nuclear plants across the United States. The company calls itself the world's largest generator of renewable energy from the wind and sun. FPL earns returns set by Florida regulators on the power plants and grid lines it builds, while Energy Resources sells power to utilities, technology companies and other large buyers under long-term contracts. NextEra Energy was formed in 1984 as the holding company for Florida Power & Light, which dates to 1925, and is based in Juno Beach, Florida.

A $22 billion gas-fired power plant will supply a data center campus in South Texas, the result of a trade deal between the US and South Korea. Dubbed Project Star, the plant in Encinal, La Salle County, will be operated by NextEra Energy Resources and Related Companies, with San Antonio-based Lewis Energy Group as a partner. The plant will generate 6.47 gigawatts, mainly for the 5-gigawatt data center campus that Related Digital is building next door. Excess power will go to the Texas grid. NextEra expects about 8,400 construction jobs and 170 permanent jobs. The first phase should be operational in 2029, with full capacity by 2032. The project stems from a $350 billion 2025 US-South Korea deal. Korean companies will supply power generation equipment and help with engineering, construction, and operations.
Bloom Energy and NextEra Energy offer investors very different bets on clean power, according to a comparison of their FY 2025 results. Bloom, which makes on-site fuel cell systems for data centres, grew revenue 37.3% to nearly $2.0 billion. It posted a net loss of about $88.4 million and free cash flow of roughly $57.2 million. NextEra, which runs Florida Power & Light and a large renewables business, reported revenue of about $27.5 billion, up 11%. Net income was nearly $6.8 billion, and free cash flow was almost $3.2 billion. NextEra trades at a forward price-to-earnings ratio of 19.1x against Bloom's 107.9x, and pays a 3.2% dividend. Bloom pays none.
Electricity demand over the next 20 years is expected to run six times higher than from 2005 to 2025, driven by artificial intelligence (AI) and electric vehicles. Nuclear power is set to help meet it. Small reactor developers Oklo and NuScale Power are risky bets. In the second quarter of 2026, Oklo made $1.4 million in revenue against $74.4 million in operating expenses; NuScale made $75,000 against just over $64 million. Neither pays a dividend. Dividend payers offer other routes. Constellation Energy, which runs the largest US nuclear fleet, yields about 0.5% and has power deals with Microsoft, Meta, and Amazon. NextEra Energy yields 3.2% and plans to buy Dominion Energy. Brookfield Renewable yields 5.3% and owns a stake in Westinghouse.
