About the company

Riot Platforms operates large-scale Bitcoin mining facilities and provides electrical engineering services through its subsidiary, ESS Metron. The company uses specialized computers called ASIC miners to solve complex math problems that secure the Bitcoin network, earning digital currency as a reward. Unlike many competitors who rely solely on mining, Riot is vertically integrated, meaning it builds its own electrical infrastructure and is expanding into high-performance computing and AI data centers to diversify its income. Its goal is to leverage its massive power capacity in Texas to become a leading provider of digital infrastructure for both the cryptocurrency and artificial intelligence industries.

Riot frees $494M in bitcoin after repaying $200M Coinbase loan early

Riot Platforms has repaid a $200 million loan to Coinbase, freeing 5,821 bitcoin worth approximately $494 million at current prices. The Nasdaq-listed Bitcoin miner cleared the debt on 21 September, seven months ahead of the April 2027 deadline, according to an SEC filing. The released coins represent over half of the 11,380 bitcoin Riot held on 30 June. The company had pledged the bitcoin as collateral for the loan, which carried a 6.15% fixed interest rate. Riot has been selling more bitcoin than it mines whilst spending heavily to convert its Texas facilities into AI data centres. In August, the company signed a 20-year, $9.1 billion lease for computing capacity at its Rockdale campus. Morgan Stanley provided a $573 million interim construction loan. The filing does not specify how Riot raised funds for the repayment or its plans for the freed bitcoin.

Riot Platforms shares rise 4.8% as Bitcoin crosses $72,000, announces $9.8B AI pipeline

Riot Platforms shares rose 4.80% to $20.31 as Bitcoin surged past $72,000 following a White House crypto summit hosted by President Donald Trump. As a major digital infrastructure operator, Riot's stock serves as a high-beta proxy for Bitcoin prices. The company reported second-quarter revenue of $174.2 million, up 14% year-over-year, driven partly by its expanding data centre business. Riot maintains over $1.2 billion in liquid assets despite net loss pressures. Riot announced a 20-year lease agreement with AI firm Anthropic for 191 megawatts of power at its Rockdale, Texas campus. Combined with an existing AMD agreement, the company has secured 241 megawatts representing approximately $9.8 billion in contracted revenue.

Riot Platforms sells 4,300 Bitcoin for $271M to fund operations and AI data centres

Riot Platforms sold 4,300 Bitcoin during the second quarter to fund operations and its expanding artificial intelligence data centre business. The cryptocurrency miner still holds 11,380 BTC worth $717.65 million. The company ended Q2 with over $1.2 billion in liquid assets, including $548.9 million in cash. It mined 1,587 Bitcoin in the quarter, up from 1,426 a year earlier, though mining revenue fell 19% year-over-year to $113.7 million. The cost to mine one Bitcoin reached $90,631, exceeding the $71,667 production value per coin. Rising power costs and expansion of its Kentucky facility drove mining costs higher. Anthropic secures $9.1B lease for AI data centre at former Texas Alcoa site

Artificial intelligence company Anthropic has reportedly signed a $9.1 billion lease at the former Alcoa smelting site in Rockdale, Texas. Riot Platforms disclosed the 20-year agreement in quarterly filings, though it did not name the tenant. Bloomberg sources confirmed Anthropic's involvement. The deal, running through 2048, could reach $16.1 billion with two five-year extensions. It includes 191 megawatts of information technology load, enough to power up to 47,700 Texas homes during peak summer conditions. The agreement adds to Riot's Milam County developments. Earlier this year, chipmaker AMD signed a $1 billion, 10-year lease for a 200-acre data centre at the site. The campus now has 700 megawatts of power capacity and employs approximately 250 people.
