Northeastern opens AI makerspace in partnership with Microsoft.

Northeastern opens AI makerspace in partnership with Microsoft. October 1, 2026 Microsoft representatives speak at the AI makerspace Sept. 25. The space intends to assist students on how to effectively use artificial intelligence. Northeastern's artificial intelligence, or AI, makerspace opened Sept. 28 on the first floor of Snell Library, where makerspace staff will lead workshops and guide students and faculty in using the technology. Created in partnership with Microsoft, the AI makerspace aims to help students, faculty and staff learn how to use AI efficiently, according to its webpage. Microsoft has struck similar partnerships with other universities, including the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and the University of Kentucky. Other universities, including Carnegie Mellon University and the Georgia Institute of Technology, have launched AI makerspaces in collaboration with JPMorgan Chase & Co. and NVIDIA, respectively. Microsoft representatives and Northeastern staff held the grand opening on Sept. 24 and 25, where they held events throughout the day and walked around talking to students. "If you only have a broad understanding of AI, it's a place where you can learn more," said Michelle Pruitt, a Microsoft representative. The event also featured an artwork gallery which invited students to submit work that "engages the relationship between people and technology," according to a Sept. 9 email sent to students in the College of Arts, Media and Design. "We're in a world where AI is prevalent," said Sarah Callen, a makerspace staff member and senior director of learning and design enablement for Northeastern's Experiential Digital Global Education team. "Having a place to be able to get those skills and be competitive in the marketplace [is] going to be really important for students." Many students attending the grand opening expressed interest in the usage of AI, but also supported regulating it. Minh Huynh, a graduate student pursuing a master's degree in game science and design, said that AI can be used productively for learning and business, but added that people using AI "need to be skeptical... because you don't want to lose your own thinking." According to an email sent out by the Office of the Chancellor Sept. 9, the makerspace "keeps people, connection, and original thinking at the heart of AI." "[AI] should be used to the fullest potential in education," said Namita Anand Deshpande, a second-year graduate student majoring in sustainable building systems. "But I feel like the originality should be that of the human." As the technology has evolved and seeped into higher education, Northeastern has positioned itself as a leader in the space of AI. This year, the university launched an AI major to replace its data science major, as well as 24 AI combined major offerings. This decision responded to "increased demand from students, parents, and employers for AI skills," according to a university webpage about the change. In 2025, Northeastern launched a partnership with Anthropic's Claude, granting all students, faculty and staff access to the platform.
