About the company

Amazon runs the largest online store in the United States and rents cloud computing to businesses and governments through Amazon Web Services. AWS pioneered renting computing power over the internet, and Amazon built its own delivery network to get orders to customers quickly. Shoppers buy from Amazon and from independent sellers on its store, and Prime members pay a subscription for fast free shipping, streaming video and music, and other perks. AWS rents out computing power, storage, databases, and AI tools so companies can run software without owning servers, and Amazon also makes Kindle e-readers and Echo speakers with the Alexa assistant. Jeff Bezos founded Amazon in 1994, and it is based in Seattle, Washington.

What believers are saying

  • AI drives growth: AWS's AI and custom-chip sales each more than doubled, passing $25 billion a year by June 2026.
  • Stock grants gained value: shares hit a record in August 2026, making Amazon the fifth company to reach $3 trillion.
  • Ads are a third engine beside stores and AWS: they grew 26% to $19.8 billion in the June 2026 quarter.

What critics are saying

  • AWS's lead is shrinking: in the June 2026 quarter, Google Cloud grew 82% and Microsoft's Azure 43%, versus AWS's 37%.
  • Job security has slipped: Amazon cut 30,000 corporate jobs in October 2025 and January 2026 to reduce management layers.
  • Expect five office days a week: Amazon ended its three-day hybrid policy for corporate staff in January 2025.

What makes Amazon unique

  • Most of Amazon's profit comes from cloud: AWS made 21% of sales but 60% of operating profit in mid-2026.
  • Amazon is America's biggest parcel carrier by volume: it handled 6.9 billion packages in 2025, more than the Postal Service.
  • Writing matters more than slides: Amazon meetings open with silent reading of a six-page memo instead of PowerPoint.

Amazon Q3 earnings on October 29: AWS growth and $197B–$202B sales guidance in focus

Amazon will report third-quarter earnings on October 29. The stock has gained 8% this year, trailing the broader market, even as demand grows for Amazon Web Services (AWS) and artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure. Amazon guided Q3 net sales of $197 billion to $202 billion, implying about 11% year-over-year growth at the midpoint. AWS revenue grew 36.7% in Q2, and its backlog stands at $496 billion. Advertising revenue rose 26% to $19.8 billion. Analysts expect earnings of $2.01 per share, up about 3%. Heavy AI spending may limit near-term margin gains. Analysts hold a "Strong Buy" consensus rating on the stock.

Amazon promises 30,000 entry-level UK jobs by 2030 after cutting 30,000 corporate roles

Amazon plans to create 30,000 entry-level jobs in the UK by 2030 through a new programme called the Amazon Youth Promise. Salaries will start at £31,000 (roughly $41,500), and the company will also train young people not in education, employment or training (Neets). The UK has about one million Neets, mostly in its largest cities. Amazon joins Microsoft, Cisco, and IBM in pledging jobs through the government's Youth Guarantee initiative. The announcement comes as Amazon cuts white-collar roles. It let go of roughly 1,000 workers in India, the UK, and its retail business in early October, on top of 30,000 corporate jobs cut over the past year to focus on AI. "This is exactly the kind of employer leadership that will reach young people in the communities that need it the most," said Pat McFadden, work and pensions secretary.

$1,000 in Amazon a decade ago is now worth $5,966 despite a 50% crash

A $1,000 investment in Amazon a decade ago is worth $5,966 today, a 497% return that beats the S&P 500's 255% gain. The stock held up despite a roughly 50% fall after the company overbuilt its fulfilment network and posted its first unprofitable year since 2014 in 2022. Cloud growth has returned under chief executive officer Andy Jassy. Amazon Web Services (AWS) revenue rose 36.7% to $42.2 billion in the second quarter of 2026, its fastest growth in 18 quarters, driven by AI demand. Advertising brought in $19.8 billion, up 26%. Spending is the risk. Amazon expects about $220 billion in capital expenditure in 2026, while trailing free cash flow stands at -$7.6 billion. The stock trades at a price-to-earnings ratio near 35. Five-year buyers have trailed the S&P 500.

Amazon's free cash flow turns negative at $11.6B as AI spending heads for $220B

Amazon earned $135 billion in net income over the four quarters ended June 2026, but its free cash flow was negative $11.6 billion. Free cash flow was $48.3 billion in the twelve months to June 2024 and $13.5 billion a year later. Most of the cash is going to AWS and generative AI data centres. Amazon spent $53.1 billion on capital projects in the June quarter, against $45.4 billion in operating cash. It now expects about $220 billion of capital spending in 2026, up from about $200 billion, because memory costs more. Total debt rose to $223 billion from $134 billion a year earlier. Management points to a $496 billion backlog and 36.7% AWS revenue growth in the June quarter. Third-quarter results, due in October 2026, will show whether spending is easing against operating cash.

The company raised the low end of its capital spending forecast by $5 billion, to $135 billion to $145 billion. Jeff Bezos lost $11 billion as Amazon fell nearly 5%.
