Requirements
  • A Bachelor of Science or Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Ability to bound electrochemical, thermal, and mechanical problems using first-principles reasoning before using simulation.
  • Experience testing and validating complex electromechanical assemblies, including batteries, and owning validation strategy and sign-off across full programs.
  • Hands-on ability to build fixtures, instrument hardware, debug systems, and operate test equipment independently.
  • Proficiency with data acquisition systems, oscilloscopes, power supplies, electronic loads, environmental chambers, sensors, and Python or MATLAB for test automation and data analysis.
  • Experience defining validation strategies, writing test plans, and owning production-readiness sign-off decisions.
  • Ability to work directly with overseas suppliers to evaluate technical capabilities and lead on-site validation activities.
  • Willingness to travel up to 15% of the time if needed.
Responsibilities
  • Define the validation strategy for electromechanical hardware from prototype through production release, including test coverage, acceptance criteria, and sign-off requirements.
  • Design test methodologies covering performance, reliability, durability, environmental, and abuse testing across mechanical, electrical, and thermal domains.
  • Build and bring up prototypes and test hardware, owning instrumentation, debugging, and root-cause analysis when failures occur.
  • Design fixtures, automation tools, and lab infrastructure to improve test quality, repeatability, and speed.
  • Analyze test data and translate findings into design actions and program risk assessments.
  • Partner with Battery Design, battery management systems, Systems, and Vehicle Engineering to ground validation in real use cases and behaviors.
  • Coordinate with external test labs, certification agencies, suppliers, and contract manufacturers on compliance and validation activities.
  • Set standards for rigor, speed, and quality as an early member of the test engineering team.
Desired Qualifications
  • Deep understanding of lithium-ion cell behavior, including thermal runaway mechanisms, degradation modes, electrochemical operating limits, and cell-to-pack/system failure propagation.
  • Hands-on cell characterization and abuse testing experience, including nail penetration, pulse power, and degradation cycling.
  • Familiarity with thermal simulation and correlating models against measured test data.
  • Familiarity with battery safety and compliance standards such as UN 38.3, UL 1642/1973, and SAE J2464, or equivalent.
  • Background in small electric vehicles, two-wheelers, or light electric mobility platforms.
  • Experience managing technical relationships with external certification laboratories and regulatory agencies.

The TM-B arrives after a prolonged wait. The TM-B is Also's first product to reach consumers, and its arrival matters more than a typical product launch might. For a young company still building credibility, the gap between announcement and delivery is the period where startups either prove they can execute or bleed enthusiasm. Also spent months in that gap. The delays weren't unusual for hardware-focused startups, where supply chain complexity, manufacturing tolerances, and regulatory requirements stack up against optimistic timelines. Getting a new electric two-wheeler certified, assembled, and shipped involves a different kind of operational weight than pushing a software update. Also is now past that stage - at least for this model. What distinguishes Also from the crowded e-bike market isn't its current product lineup so much as its origin story and its stated direction. The company spun out of Rivian, the electric truck and delivery van maker backed by Amazon, which gives Also a specific kind of institutional DNA - one oriented toward fleet logistics and last-mile delivery rather than recreational cycling. Cities like New York, Paris, and Amsterdam have seen cargo e-bike deployments grow as delivery density increases and zero-emission zones expand. A four-wheel pedal-assist cargo vehicle adds stability and load capacity to that model - effectively a step between a standard cargo bike and a small electric van. Whether Amazon deploys Also's cargo vehicles at scale depends on factors that have nothing to do with the quality of the product - fleet integration costs, routing software compatibility, regulatory approval across different city jurisdictions, and Amazon's own internal logistics priorities. Still, having Amazon as a named target customer before a product is even out of development is a position most startups spend years trying to reach. Also starting deliveries of the TM-B now gives the company something concrete to point to while its larger cargo vehicle ambitions take shape. A delivered, functioning product - even a consumer e-bike - establishes that Also can move hardware through manufacturing and fulfillment. That operational track record matters when the stakes of the next project are considerably higher. A spinoff with specific ambitions. Rivian spinoff Also will begin delivering its TM-B e-bikes next week after months of supply chain delays. The Launch Edition, priced at $4,500, has shipped from the manufacturer to Also's US warehouse, with all deliveries expected between next week and September. Also originated as a skunkworks project within Rivian in 2022. Rivian spun out the company in March 2025 with $105 million in backing from Eclipse. The startup unveiled the TM-B in October, initially targeting spring 2026 delivery before supply chain issues pushed the timeline to July, then summer. The company cited industry-wide spikes in demand for raw materials and electronic components but declined to specify which parts caused delays. Beyond e-bikes, Also plans to produce pedal-assist cargo vehicles for Amazon and autonomous delivery vehicles for DoorDash. Also's generator-driven e-bike uses software to simulate — and improve — traditional cycling

San Francisco-based startup Also has developed an electric bicycle that completely reimagines the connection between pedaling and motion. When riders pedal the TM-B, they turn a generator, with software controlling how that power combines with battery output to drive a motor. The bike emerged from conversations with Rivian, the electric car company that helped launch Also. The startup designed most components in-house, including a custom motor housed in cast magnesium and a modular seating system that allows quick configuration changes. During testing, the bike felt natural during normal riding whilst automatically adjusting resistance and power during sudden acceleration, functioning like an automatic transmission. The system responds instantly to changes in pedaling force without requiring manual gear shifts. The TM-B will be manufactured in Taiwan using Also-owned equipment and trained staff.
