It's called the Bluejay. Beyond the name, there isn't much to go on yet: no spec sheet, no press release, no launch date. The name first turned up in a company filing, and a source at Fuse has since confirmed the product is real, which is more than a filing alone would tell you, but it's still a long way short of an official announcement. But Fuse's track record, and specifically what it's just done on export tariffs, makes this one worth flagging now rather than waiting for the glossy launch page. Who is Fuse, if you haven't come across them. Fuse isn't a household name the way Octopus or British Gas are, but it's built a solid reputation fast. It's a fintech-backed challenger supplier that's spent the last couple of years undercutting the big names on price, usually £100-£150 a year cheaper on its fixed tariff than the alternatives, while running 100% renewable-backed electricity. What gets it talked about on switching forums, though, is the app and the support: live usage tracking that actually works like a proper smart meter display, and round-the-clock customer service that people consistently rate well, its Trustpilot score sits around 4.7 from a few thousand reviews, which is an outlier for an energy company. None of that is solar-specific, but it's the reputation Bluejay would be launching into. The solar-relevant part is more recent. As of 1 April 2026, Fuse became a mandatory Smart Export Guarantee licensee, and its SEG offer is unusual: a flat 13p per kWh exported, open to any solar owner, not just Fuse's own import customers. That already beats Octopus Outgoing's 12p on a like-for-like basis, and it does it without the lock-in most suppliers attach to their best export rates. That's the part of Fuse's track record that matters here, not just "they do export tariffs" but "they've already shown they'll structure one to be more open than the market leader." What Plug-In Solar, Explained actually know about Bluejay. Not a lot, and it's worth being upfront about that. The company filing that revealed the Bluejay name doesn't come with specifications, pricing, or a release window attached. What Plug-In Solar, Explained do know is the shape of the thing: a stackable, grid-tied unit with solar inputs, the same format as the plug-in batteries already on the market from EcoFlow, DJI, Sigenergy, and others. Beyond that, Plug-In Solar, Explained is reading between the lines. Custom hardware, or another rebrand? The open question is whether Bluejay is genuinely Fuse's own design or an existing battery from an established manufacturer with a new badge on it. It wouldn't be the first time: Octopus's Nook launched looking near-identical to the Fox ESS S22, right down to the shoebox proportions and the stacking format. Suppliers rebadging mature hardware rather than tooling up their own isn't a criticism exactly, it's just cheaper and faster to bring to market. But it does mean the actual engineering behind the box is someone else's. I'm hoping Bluejay is the former. Fuse has shown with its SEG tariff that it's willing to structure things differently rather than just following Octopus down the well-trodden path, and a genuinely custom unit would back that up. A rebadge wouldn't be a disaster, plenty of solid batteries on this site started life as someone else's design, but it would be a less interesting story. Fuse's real advantage isn't the hardware, it's the tariff. Here's what makes Fuse worth paying attention to regardless of what's inside the box: it's already shown, with a flat 13p SEG rate open to anyone, that it's willing to undercut and out-open the established players on export. That puts it in an unusually good position to do something plug-in solar owners have been asking for: a non-MCS export tariff that doesn't route you through Octopus's current £250 non-MCS process. That Octopus route works, but it's not exactly frictionless. It still involves a fair bit of paperwork and a competency sign-off before you're exporting anything. And this bit isn't just me joining the dots: Fuse has confirmed to me directly that a non-MCS export tariff undercutting that £250 route is genuinely on the roadmap. The catch is timing. Don't expect it alongside Bluejay itself, the current steer is that it's roughly a year further out, arriving sometime after the battery is actually on sale. Worth knowing it's coming, but not worth holding off a purchase decision for. The bundling angle. The other detail worth flagging: Fuse reportedly wants to bundle Bluejay free for customers who switch to them as an electricity supplier. No further detail has come out beyond that. My guess is the battery's cost gets folded into the tariff rather than genuinely given away, and that the tariff price might soften once Fuse has recouped the hardware cost across enough customers. That's a fairly standard telecoms-style play (think "free" phone bundled into a contract), and it works fine as long as the tariff stays competitive after the bundling honeymoon ends. Worth watching what happens to Fuse's rates a year or two after Bluejay actually ships. What power users will want to see: local control. If Bluejay ships without local control, Home Assistant integration, or some kind of open API, a decent chunk of the readership here will walk straight past it. That's not a niche complaint on this site: plenty of Plug-In Solar, Explained are already running EcoFlow rigs through Home Assistant precisely because Plug-In Solar, Explained don't want to be at the mercy of a cloud app and a vendor's own optimisation logic. A supplier-tied battery with no local hooks is a harder sell to anyone who's already tasted that kind of control, tariff bundling or not. My predictions on spec. None of this is confirmed, it's an educated guess based on where the rest of the plug-in battery market has settled. But if I had to bet on the Bluejay spec sheet, I'd expect something in this range: * A 2-3kWh battery core, stackable for more capacity * 3-4 solar MPPT inputs * 800W grid-tied output, the ceiling most of this category has converged on * At least one AC port for running appliances "off-grid" during a power cut That's roughly where the DJI Power 2000, the Fox ESS S22, and most of the current crop of stackable units sit. It would be a surprise if Fuse came in wildly outside that band. Why this matters. On its own, another stackable plug-in battery isn't news, the shelf is getting crowded. What makes Bluejay worth a post at this early stage is who's behind it. Fuse already has a track record of doing something different with export tariffs, and it's confirmed a non-MCS export tariff is genuinely coming, just not for a while. Roughly a year after Bluejay itself is on sale, by the current steer, so this isn't a day-one package deal. Whether that combination ends up being a real shake-up for plug-in solar owners still depends on the two open questions here: is the hardware actually Fuse's own, and does that tariff undercut Octopus's £250 non-MCS route by enough to matter. If both come together in Fuse's favour, this is worth watching closely. If Bluejay turns out to be a rebadge with a "free with switch" hook and the tariff slips further, it's a smaller story. It will also explore new ways for households to participate in flexibility markets, including those without their own low carbon technologies, ensuring that inclusive tariffs and methods allow everyone to benefit from cleaner, more affordable energy. The project's current phase will map potential income streams, design trials and develop methods that can be tested in future phases. Building on the Government's Local Power Plan, UK Power Networks and its partners will work closely with policymakers and regulators to address technical and regulatory barriers, building the right frameworks to support long-term growth in community energy.
