Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Nuclear Engineering, or a related field is required.
  • At least 5 years of experience in radiation-effects engineering for high-reliability electronics is required.
  • Experience with radiation environment software modeling tools and resources, such as OMERE, is required.
  • Strong understanding of radiation effects, test methods, and test execution is required.
  • Hands-on experience planning and executing radiation test campaigns is required.
  • Experience developing analysis tools, automation, and internal data systems to support modeling, testing, and engineering workflows is required.
  • Working knowledge of electrical schematics is required, including the ability to identify common components, understand basic signal flow, and locate relevant circuit information.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work across disciplines are required.
Responsibilities
  • Develop and own the company's radiation assurance strategy, defining the philosophy, requirements, and decision framework governing radiation testing, component selection, and radiation-tolerant system design.
  • Build radiation budgets, calculate margins, analyze mission environments, and assess system-level reliability.
  • Plan and execute Single Event Effect, Total Ionizing Dose, and Displacement Damage test campaigns at the component and assembly level.
  • Analyze test results, identify vulnerabilities, and recommend mitigation strategies.
  • Create and manage internal tools and workflows for radiation analysis, component qualification, and validation of component selection.
  • Partner with engineering teams to inform component selection, derating, and architecture decisions.
  • Monitor manufacturer-issued product change notifications and assess their impact on radiation performance and qualification.
  • Support reliability analysis as it pertains to radiation effects.
  • Support failure analysis and on-orbit anomaly investigations.
  • Drive improvements to internal standards for radiation modeling and verification.
Desired Qualifications
  • A master's or Ph.D. in a relevant field.
  • Experience performing or overseeing electrical circuit analysis and implementing radiation-effects mitigations.
  • Comprehensive understanding of digital and analog electronics, schematics, and printed circuit board layout principles.
  • Scripting and software development experience for data analysis and test automation using MATLAB or Python.
  • Prior experience with system reliability calculations and roll-up, particularly as it pertains to radiation risks.
  • Experience developing printed circuit board schematics and layouts with an electronic computer-aided design tool such as Altium, KiCad, or OrCAD.
  • Experience with radiation testing at the printed circuit board and subassembly level.
  • Experience with field-programmable gate array and application-specific integrated circuit radiation characterization and mitigation.
  • Prior work in small, fast-iteration aerospace teams.

Kapta Space develops spaceborne radar systems for LEO satellites using metasurface antennas to create electronically steerable arrays, enabling high-resolution Earth observation for defense and commercial customers. Its on-orbit sensors perform SAR, InSAR, and GMTI, delivering imagery regardless of weather or daylight. It differentiates by using metasurface ESAs to reduce cost, complexity, and power versus traditional AESAs, led by Echodyne veterans with early DoD funding and seed rounds to accelerate demonstrations. The goal is to build a persistent space-based radar constellation that provides geospatial data for defense and civilian monitoring of infrastructure and land displacement.

Kapta Space, a Seattle-based startup, emerged from stealth with $5 million in seed funding led by MetaVC Partners, with Entrada Ventures and Blue Collective also participating.
