Requirements
  • A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • For Medical Assistant I, one of the following is required: graduation from an accredited medical assistant program; graduation from a medical assistant training program with externship; one year of relevant healthcare experience with formal training such as Licensed Nursing Assistant, Emergency Medical Technician, or Combat Medic; or one year of prior experience as a Medical Assistant.
  • For Medical Assistant II, one of the following is required: graduation from an accredited medical assistant program; graduation from a medical assistant training program with externship; or at least three years of experience as a Medical Assistant.
  • Medical Assistant I requires one year of relevant healthcare experience, which can include an externship.
  • Medical Assistant II requires at least three years of experience as a Medical Assistant.
  • Medical Assistant II requires Certified Medical Assistant, Registered Medical Assistant, or Certified Clinical Medical Assistant certification.
  • Basic Life Support authorization must be obtained within 90 days of employment and maintained throughout employment.
  • Prepare patients for examination, obtain and document vital signs and other condition-specific measurements, perform diagnostic and screening tests, collect and process specimens, administer medications and immunizations, process prescription refills, handle prior authorizations, and manage clinical supplies and medication samples.
Responsibilities
  • Prepare visit charts by locating diagnostic test results, emergency or urgent care reports, discharge summaries, and consult or primary care provider reports in the medical record for provider access.
  • Room patients for provider visits by documenting the chief complaint, allergies, vital signs, medication list, tobacco history, last menstrual period, health maintenance overrides, and related information accurately and promptly.
  • Obtain and document age- or condition-specific measurements, including vital signs, height, weight, head circumference, peak flow, and pulse oximetry.
  • Conduct and document hearing, vision, respiratory, and electrocardiogram testing.
  • Perform and document condition-specific screening, including depression and asthma screening.
  • Obtain, document, and process specimens using the appropriate collection process and equipment.
  • Perform and document point-of-care testing accurately.
  • Perform venipuncture procedures as needed and process specimens according to policies and procedures.
  • Administer medications and immunizations through oral, nasal, injectable, rectal, and topical routes as appropriate.
  • Process medication prescription refills through telephonic, electronic, or print methods according to guidelines.
  • Handle prior authorization processes for medications and procedures and document them appropriately.
  • Manage clinical supplies and medication sample areas by keeping stock current, storing items appropriately, labeling items, and maintaining par levels.
  • Support workflow for overnight pulse oximetry and home sleep testing.
Desired Qualifications
  • One to two years of experience in a clinical ambulatory care setting is preferred.
  • Certified Medical Assistant, Registered Medical Assistant, or Certified Clinical Medical Assistant certification is preferred for Medical Assistant I.
