Requirements
  • A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • The candidate must be actively engaged in their own recovery program, with at least three years of demonstrated personal recovery and sustained abstinence from alcohol or drug use.
  • The candidate must have at least two years of work experience.
  • The candidate must be able to perform the listed physical job functions, including standing, sitting, walking, climbing stairs, bending, squatting, repetitive hand and arm movements, lifting and carrying up to 15 pounds, and maintaining required vision and hearing acuity.
  • The candidate must be able to work in a latex-safe environment and, where applicable, qualify physically for respirator use.
Responsibilities
  • Identify and screen patients in MUSC emergency departments and other MUSC locations for problematic substance use, conduct brief interventions, and further assess patients who screen positive.
  • Assess patients' readiness to change and use motivational interviewing techniques to support a plan of care.
  • Work with the care team when appropriate to evaluate patients for medication-assisted treatment and induction.
  • Work with patients and emergency department staff to identify community support services and facilitate successful linkage to rapid referral and other treatment options.
  • Help patients and family members understand how to use community services, identify barriers to treatment linkage such as transportation or lack of photo identification, and problem-solve those barriers.
  • Provide warm hand-offs to community treatment providers when appropriate.
  • Provide peer support, help patients attain their goals, and provide recovery resources and information to patients and families.
  • Model healthy coping techniques and self-help strategies.
  • Participate in regular wellness, credentialing, and oversight meetings for the peer team.
  • Serve as a patient advocate and integrate with hospital staff to reduce the stigma of addiction.
  • Act as a recovery-support resource to other clinical team members.
  • Contact patients after discharge, including patients who missed appointments, to assess barriers and provide support.
  • Manage administrative duties related to schedules, peer recovery coach coverage, and leave requests.
  • Attend required staff meetings, weekly meetings, and ongoing training as needed.
  • Complete required documentation and reports and report patient outcomes.
  • Perform other required duties.
Desired Qualifications
  • An associate's or bachelor's degree in Human Services, Counseling, or a related field is preferred.
  • Completion of the South Carolina course for Certified Peer Support Specialist is preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to relate to patients and health professionals and develop professional working relationships with partner agencies.
  • Excellent listening, verbal, and written communication skills, along with problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents and write routine reports.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Willingness to learn and interest in acquiring new skills.
