  • Maintain an active Certified Public Accountant license.
  • Have a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Accounting from a top-tier university.
  • Have at least 3 years of audit experience at a Big Four or national public accounting firm, with exposure to technology, life sciences, or medical device clients.
  • Have at least 8 years of total progressive accounting experience, including at least 3 years as a Controller, Assistant Controller, or equivalent in a venture-backed or private-equity-backed operating company.
  • Demonstrate experience drafting ASC 606 revenue recognition memos and other technical accounting position papers accepted by external auditors.
  • Have deep working knowledge of United States generally accepted accounting principles, including revenue recognition for multi-element arrangements, inventory costing, leases, and equity.
  • Have hands-on experience managing a monthly close and preparing complete financial statements and footnotes.
  • Have NetSuite enterprise resource planning experience, ideally as an administrator.
  • Have advanced Excel and financial modeling skills and be comfortable building schedules from source data.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in using AI tools, including Claude models, and creating projects and artifacts.
Responsibilities
  • Own the technical accounting file and draft ASC 606 revenue recognition memos for new and amended customer contracts, including performance-obligation identification, standalone selling price allocation, principal-versus-agent analysis, variable consideration, bill-and-hold, and contract asset and liability tracking.
  • Author and maintain accounting policy and position papers covering inventory costing and reserves, capitalization thresholds, ASC 842 leases, stock-based compensation, ASC 340-40 contract costs, debt, and convertible instruments in a form suitable for auditor review.
  • Research emerging generally accepted accounting principles guidance, assess its impact on the company, and brief leadership on conclusions and required changes.
  • Design and document internal controls and accounting procedures for a company preparing for scale, institutional diligence, and potential public-company readiness.
  • Administer NetSuite, including the chart of accounts, revenue recognition setup, inventory and material requirements planning configuration, reporting, and management of external NetSuite consultants.
  • Own the full accounting cycle, including the general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, revenue and deferred revenue, inventory and cost of goods sold, fixed assets, payroll, accruals, and equity.
  • Lead the monthly close, including journal entry review, balance sheet reconciliations, variance analysis, and flux commentary.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual generally accepted accounting principles financial statements and reporting packages for the Board of Directors, investors, and lenders.
  • Maintain revenue schedules, deferred revenue roll-forwards, and inventory reconciliations tied to contract terms and shipping records.
  • Serve as the primary liaison for the annual financial statement audit and 401(k) plan audit; plan the audit calendar, prepare prepared-by-client schedules, draft footnotes, and resolve auditor questions with supported positions.
  • Coordinate federal and state income tax returns, research and development tax credit studies, Delaware franchise tax, and sales and use tax filings with outside advisors.
  • Manage business, insurance, and statistical surveys and maintain compliance with government contracts and grant reporting requirements.
  • Lead, coach, and develop the accounting team; set priorities, review work, and build a culture of accuracy and continuous improvement.
  • Support the Senior Vice President of Finance on budgeting, reforecasts, customer profitability, pricing, and Board and investor materials.
  • Communicate conclusions in plain language to executives and the Board and defend them precisely to auditors and advisors.
  • Analyze complex data sets, surface discrepancies, and close the loop on accounting issues.
  • Engage proactively with the finance team and cross-functionally with Operations, Commercial, Research and Development, and Human Resources.
  • Manage multiple deadlines during close, audit, and Board cycles while maintaining confidentiality and compliance standards.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with hardware plus software-as-a-service or device plus data-service business models, distributor arrangements, and government- or grant-funded contracts.
  • Experience with inventory and manufacturing accounting, including contract manufacturers and standard costing.
  • Exposure to fundraising diligence, convertible notes, preferred stock, and cap table administration.
  • Experience implementing or optimizing NetSuite modules, including Advanced Revenue Management, material requirements planning, and Fixed Assets.
