Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Experience using general office equipment is required.
  • The ability to communicate clearly and effectively is required.
  • Training in medical terminology is required.
  • Legible handwriting is required.
  • The employee must maintain patient confidentiality and follow infection-control, isolation, safety, security, and personal protective equipment procedures.
  • The employee must complete required education, maintain regulatory requirements, attend staff meetings or review meeting minutes, and comply with organizational policies and the applicable union contract.
Responsibilities
  • Perform general clerical duties on the nursing unit, including preparing, compiling, and maintaining records.
  • Receive and transmit communications to appropriate persons.
  • Transcribe physician orders from patient charts to nursing records and medication sheets, prioritizing stat orders.
  • Answer and transfer telephone calls, take messages, and follow telephone procedures and etiquette.
  • Act as a receptionist by assisting visitors and directing them to patient rooms and hospital departments.
  • Keep the nurses station tidy and organized.
  • Fax information and place faxed material in the appropriate chart or department.
  • Operate the radio and pager systems at the nurses station.
  • Notify nurses about prolonged call lights and monitor alarms.
  • Place laboratory and X-ray reports on patient charts after nursing review.
  • Add required chart forms when needed.
  • Notify the laboratory about new or timed orders and follow up on overdue orders.
  • Prepare copies of patient charts for transfers and ensure discharge forms are present.
  • Maintain current call lists for physicians and staff in other departments.
  • Call surgery staff for emergency surgery under the direction of the house supervisor and after the required physician and anesthesiologist notifications.
  • Participate in department performance-improvement and quality initiatives.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and accident-free environment and respond appropriately to hospital emergency codes.
  • Communicate courteously and respectfully with patients, guests, families, and staff.
