Requirements
  • Strong understanding of insurance investor requirements, including regulatory requirements, regulatory capital, gain/loss realization, asset-liability matching, total return versus book yield, capital efficiency, rating agency considerations, GAAP versus statutory accounting, and tax optimization.
  • Ability to construct portfolios that align asset duration, credit risk, and cash flows with client liability profiles while maintaining book yield and total return targets and managing spread duration and reinvestment risk.
  • Deep markets and investment expertise, with emphasis on private markets and the full spectrum of fixed-income investing.
  • Proficiency with an analytical mindset, including bespoke insurance-related analytics needed to construct insurance portfolios.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to present complex topics to clients, prospects, market participants, and the media.
  • Proven leadership with ability to influence and challenge.
  • Ability to work effectively across organizational levels and build strong internal and external relationships.
  • Ability to work flexibly, independently, and collaboratively as part of a team.
Responsibilities
  • Manage total portfolios for insurance investors according to their stated objectives, with emphasis on multi-asset investing, fixed income, and alternatives.
  • Integrate into a multi-segment, multi-asset-class portfolio-management team overseeing investment assets in the U.S. region.
  • Collaborate with U.S. insurance-segment leadership and consultants on prospecting, client conversations, innovative client solutions, and marketing efforts.
  • Serve as a voting member of the U.S. Insurance Investment Committee and oversee investment-solution design aligned with client risk, income, capital, and regulatory objectives.
  • Lead day-to-day management of investment solutions for insurance clients in accordance with governance, investment philosophy, process, and operating protocols.
  • Coordinate with insurance investment strategy teams and back- and middle-office functions to implement investment decisions and maintain a partnership with Compliance.
  • Contribute to investment philosophy, portfolio construction, and manager selection for insurance client portfolios.
  • Help design, diligence, and implement new and complex investment solutions while supporting business-development and client-management initiatives.
  • Represent the portfolio-management team internally and externally, including at C-suite levels.
  • Evaluate asset-class strategies and implementation vehicles across capital, regulatory, tax, and accounting considerations.
  • Identify and manage value-added projects for internal stakeholders and clients.
  • Oversee manager selection, guidelines, and ongoing discussions with asset managers executing mandates for insurance clients.
  • Present markets, portfolios, and performance to clients, management committees, and investment committees.
  • Collaborate with other Marsh entities to execute and deliver joint services.
  • Serve as a subject-matter expert across insurance clients.
  • Participate in portfolio-management team meetings, group projects, town halls, and team activities.
  • Train and mentor junior colleagues.
  • Help create and drive insurance thought leadership through Mercer’s Intellectual Capital Teams.
  • Help develop pitchbooks and training materials as needed.
Desired Qualifications
  • CFA, CAIA, FSAI, or FIA qualification, or a similar qualification.
  • 15+ years of investment experience, including 10+ years in insurance portfolio management.
  • Working knowledge of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners structure and initiatives, statutory accounting rules, and state-level regulatory oversight.
  • Experience designing, evaluating, and recommending insurance-specific investment vehicles.
  • Strong relationships across the asset-manager and general-partner community.
  • Experience across health, property and casualty, reinsurance, captive, traditional life-insurance, and annuity-based life-insurance entities.
  • Strong organization, attention to detail, and ability to meet tight deadlines.
  • Strong internal and external communication skills and ability to navigate teams across Mercer and Marsh globally.
