Requirements
  • Nurse Practitioners must complete an accredited Nurse Practitioner program and hold a Master's degree in Nursing.
  • Physician Assistants must complete an accredited Physician Assistant program and hold a Bachelor's degree; a Master's degree is strongly preferred.
  • National certification as a Nurse Practitioner or certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants is required.
  • Current Drug Enforcement Administration registration is required.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support certification is required.
  • Basic Life Support certification is required.
  • Nurse Practitioners must hold current or compact registered nurse licensure and Nurse Practitioner approval to practice in North Carolina.
  • Physician Assistants must be licensed in North Carolina and certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.
  • Drug Enforcement Administration licensure with full prescriptive authority is required.
Responsibilities
  • Evaluate established adult cardiovascular and heart failure patients and patients requiring early post-discharge follow-up.
  • Assess and diagnose clinical conditions, develop treatment plans, establish priorities and outcomes, and evaluate the effectiveness and cost efficiency of care.
  • Perform comprehensive histories, physical examinations, and medical decision-making; develop and implement plans of care, including medication reconciliation and titration; and document patient encounters, findings, diagnostic results, treatment plans, responses, and communications with the supervising physician.
  • Order, review, interpret, and communicate laboratory and diagnostic study results.
  • Facilitate and coordinate echocardiograms, stress testing, cardiac magnetic resonance imaging, cardiac catheterization, laboratory studies, and other indicated evaluations with the supervising physician.
  • Educate patients and families regarding diagnoses, medications, treatment plans, procedures, preparation, risks, benefits, and expected outcomes.
  • Coordinate care with referring and consulting providers, obtain outside records and test results, and ensure timely communication among the healthcare team.
  • Manage MAESTRO in-basket messages and complete required clinical and administrative documentation.
  • Perform procedures and use prescriptive authority within the approved scope of practice, credentialing, practice agreements, and applicable North Carolina regulations; consult and collaborate with the supervising physician as appropriate.
  • Provide patient, family, and staff education; serve as a clinical resource and role model; assist with orientation and training of new employees, students, and trainees; incorporate evidence-based practice and current research into care; and participate in quality improvement, research, professional development, and required supervisory and performance evaluation activities.
Desired Qualifications
  • At least two years of experience as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant in cardiology, including experience caring for heart failure patients.
