About the Job

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline.
  • At least 1 year of experience working with engines or fluid systems.
  • Ability to travel in support of testing, launching, and maintenance of flight hardware, up to 10%.
  • Ability to pass Air Force background checks for Cape Canaveral and Vandenberg.
  • Ability to work extended hours and weekends when production, test, or launch timelines require it.

Responsibilities

  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of the Falcon propulsion systems.
  • Make critical decisions for the processing of Merlin and Stage Propulsion hardware during build, test, integration, and flight to ensure mission success.
  • Define, implement, and validate acceptance and operational requirements to promote reliability, rapid reusability, and streamlined processing of Falcon rockets.
  • Take primary responsibility for the success of Merlin engines or Stage Propulsion hardware for a given test or launch campaign.
  • Support test and launch operations across SpaceX facilities, including live on-console support from mission control.
  • Perform post-test and post-flight data reviews, and provide technical recommendations to the Vehicle Maintenance team to enable rapid, reliable reuse of hardware.
  • Solve undefined, multidisciplinary problems while interfacing with engineering and technician teams across disciplines, including production, test, launch, avionics, structures, guidance, navigation and control, thermal and fluid analysis, flight and ground software, mission management, and flight reliability.
  • Work with commercial and government customers to reduce technical debt, mitigate flight risks, and ensure hardware and software reliability.
  • Lead propulsion anomaly investigations and drive them to resolution.
  • Develop automation capabilities using coding for rapid test and flight data analysis, flight software verification, and other engineering processes, and eliminate recurring work.
  • Optimize recurring test and mission tasks to support an increasingly demanding launch manifest.

Desired Qualifications

  • A master's degree in mechanical engineering or aeronautical/astronautical engineering.
  • Analytical or scientific programming experience.
  • Experience with collaborative coding in version-controlled repositories such as Git.
  • Experience with Python.
  • A strong foundation in fluid mechanics, including compressible and incompressible flows, thermodynamics, combustion, structures and fracture mechanics, and materials.
  • Familiarity with liquid propellant rocket engine cycles, launch vehicle fluid systems, and components.
  • Ability to communicate clearly in writing and verbally and present recommendations concisely to stakeholders, customers, and management.
  • Hands-on hardware experience performing fabrication, assembly, or testing in a professional, academic, entrepreneurial, or hobby setting.
  • Experience testing liquid propellant rockets or working with pneumatic systems, hydraulic systems, cryogenic propellants, pressure control devices, valves, tubes or pipes, diffusers, and fittings.
  • Experience with pad, launch, or flight operations for an integrated vehicle.

About the Company

SpaceX

Builds rockets and runs Starlink satellite internet

SpaceX builds and launches reusable rockets and spacecraft for NASA, the military, and companies, and it runs Starlink, a satellite internet service for homes and businesses. In 2020, its Dragon capsule became the first privately built spacecraft to carry astronauts to the International Space Station. Its Falcon 9 rocket lands its first stage so the booster can fly again, which cuts launch costs, while Starlink beams internet from low-orbit satellites to small dishes for a monthly fee. SpaceX also owns xAI, maker of the Grok chatbot and owner of the social network X, and is building Starship, a fully reusable rocket meant to carry people to the Moon and Mars. Elon Musk founded SpaceX in 2002, and it is based in Starbase, Texas.
