About the company

Albertsons runs supermarket chains across the United States, selling groceries, fresh food and household goods under regional banners such as Safeway, Vons, Jewel-Osco, ACME and Shaw's. Instead of one national brand, it keeps local store names that shoppers have used for decades and stocks its own labels such as Signature Select and O Organics next to national brands. Customers shop in stores or through its apps and websites for curbside pickup and home delivery, with digital coupons and rewards tied to the Albertsons for U loyalty program. It earns money mainly from retail sales in stores and online, plus fuel and advertising sold to consumer brands. Albertsons was founded in 1939 and is based in Boise, Idaho.

Kroger and Albertsons hire tech chiefs to compete with Amazon and Walmart

Kroger and Albertsons have made senior technology hires as they compete with Amazon and Walmart in the evolving grocery market. Technology has fundamentally changed grocery shopping, with customers now able to order from multiple delivery services, Amazon, Walmart, and Target. Albertsons appointed Meg Whitman as executive chair of its board, a newly created role. Whitman previously led eBay from 1998 to 2008, growing annual revenue from $30 million to over $8 billion. She also headed Hewlett-Packard from 2011 to 2018. Whitman will advise CEO Susan Morris on operations and strategy as Albertsons streamlines operations around AI technologies and improves customer experience across stores and digital channels. The Food Industry Association notes that real-time data, automation, and AI have become essential for success.

Albertsons closes 20 stores, cuts hundreds of jobs after $24.6B Kroger merger blocked

Albertsons is closing additional stores and cutting jobs nationwide following the collapse of its $24.6 billion merger with Kroger. The Boise-based grocery chain, which operates Safeway, Vons and Pavilions, has shut roughly 20 stores in 2025. Recent closures include Vons locations in Escondido and Redlands, California, eliminating 135 jobs, and stores across Texas and Washington, DC, affecting over 200 workers. The company is pivoting to cost-cutting measures, including automation and artificial intelligence investments, as it competes with Walmart and other low-cost operators. A federal judge blocked the merger in 2024, ruling it would reduce competition and raise prices. Kroger and Albertsons spent approximately $1.5 billion pursuing the deal. Albertsons' stock has declined over the past year as it restructures operations independently.

Major US grocery chains close dozens of stores, lay off thousands

Major US supermarket chains are closing underperforming stores and warehouses as they compete with big-box retailers like Walmart and Target. Albertsons is shutting two North Texas supermarkets and laying off 138 workers by 25 April, adding to 20 closures in 2025. The company also closed 12 Safeway locations across Colorado, Nebraska and New Mexico in November 2025 and eliminated 380 corporate office positions. Ahold Delhaize USA announced it would close six e-commerce fulfilment centres in Pennsylvania and Virginia, transitioning to store-based fulfilment. Albertsons closes 120-year-old Vons grocery store in California, cuts 65 jobs

Albertsons is closing a Vons supermarket in Escondido, California, by 1 May, laying off 65 employees. The store's pharmacy will shut earlier on 16 April. The company cited underperformance and failure to meet financial expectations as reasons for the closure. The closure follows Albertsons shutting 20 locations in 2025, including 12 Safeway stores across Colorado, Nebraska and New Mexico in November. The company also eliminated 380 corporate jobs in Arizona and California last year. Supermarket chains continue struggling against big-box retailers like Walmart, which controls 23.6% of the US grocery market. Grocery chains face rising costs, changing consumer preferences and unfavourable lease rates. Kroger recently closed three California stores and nine fulfilment centres, eliminating about 1,700 jobs.
