Requirements
  • Completion certificate from a phlebotomy vocational program.
  • Current Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) license in California.
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • At least one year of acute-care hospital phlebotomy experience.
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, lift, squat, bend, twist, and reach above the shoulders during the work shift.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds from floor to waist and up to 20 pounds; carry up to 40 pounds a reasonable distance; and push or pull with 30 pounds of force.
Responsibilities
  • Collect blood specimens daily through venipuncture and blood cultures from inpatients and outpatients, ensuring positive patient identification, accurate specimen labeling, proper specimen handling, and timely transport to the laboratory.
  • Instruct or question patients about fasting conditions for blood chemistries, anticoagulant therapy for coagulation studies, and related preparation requirements.
  • Assist in training Medical Technology students and new phlebotomists in venipuncture and related phlebotomy techniques.
  • Serve as a resource for less-experienced phlebotomy staff by answering questions and resolving immediate phlebotomy problems.
  • Inspect, receive, and maintain phlebotomy supply inventory and keep phlebotomy stock rooms clean and orderly.
  • Process specimens for assigned clinical laboratory sections, including Blood Bank, Chemistry, Hematology, Immunology, and Microbiology; perform VISTA accessioning, centrifugation, plasma/serum separation, specimen storage, slide preparation, culture setup, timed urine specimen measurement, and documentation of specimen status, special handling requirements, condition, and volume.
  • Prepare and stain slides, including differentials, Gram stains, and reticulocytes.
  • Prepare specimens, packaging, and request forms for reference laboratories.
  • Build, print, and maintain VISTA phlebotomy collection lists and labels; maintain tallies of outpatient and inpatient phlebotomy.
  • Answer telephone inquiries about laboratory test information, status, and results.
