  • For the Nurse Practitioner pathway, a Master's Degree in Nursing from a Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE)-accredited nursing program is required.
  • For the Nurse Practitioner pathway, national certification by a recognized Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) certification center is required.
  • For the Nurse Practitioner pathway, licensure or eligibility for licensure as a professional Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in West Virginia is required.
  • For the Nurse Practitioner pathway, American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required; additional Advanced Life Support training may be required at the department's discretion.
  • For the Physician Assistant pathway, a Bachelor's or Master's Degree as a Medical/Surgical Physician Assistant, as applicable, is required.
  • For the Physician Assistant pathway, graduation from an Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA)-approved training program is required.
  • For the Physician Assistant pathway, certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants is required.
  • For the Physician Assistant pathway, licensure or eligibility for licensure by the West Virginia Board of Medicine or West Virginia Board of Osteopathic Medicine is required.
  • For the Physician Assistant pathway, American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required; additional Advanced Life Support training may be required at the department's discretion.
  • Proficiency with computers is required.
  • The position requires working closely with others, potentially irregular hours, exposure to biohazards and infectious diseases, possible work near the deceased, working with hands in water, and exposure to electrical hazards associated with patient-care equipment.
  • The position requires physical strength or stamina for lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, positioning patients, standing, walking, and carrying patients, materials, or equipment weighing 40 pounds or more.
Responsibilities
  • Coordinate and provide comprehensive management of hospitalized patients, including coordination with medical and surgical specialty teams to develop a comprehensive plan of care and review it with the clinical team.
  • Participate in directing patient care, perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures and peri-operative services, and coordinate ambulatory management, discharge planning, and follow-up as applicable.
  • Participate in educating residents and medical and nursing students.
  • Manage individualized care for hospitalized patients and their families during inpatient stays and plan immediate post-discharge disposition in the ambulatory setting.
  • Complete daily rounds, consultations, and pre-procedure evaluations.
  • Complete integrated assessments.
  • In collaboration with hospitalist faculty or by following established clinical guidelines and protocols, order additional tests or consultations as appropriate.
  • Perform diagnostic tests and communicate results in accordance with established clinical guidelines and scope of practice.
  • Consult and communicate with clinic and hospital staff regarding abnormal evaluation findings.
  • Conduct succinct, comprehensive clinical evaluations and document findings in the medical record.
  • Facilitate patient discharge by coordinating appropriate services and tests needed before discharge for outpatient clinic follow-up, as applicable.
  • Develop individualized plans of care, including patient teaching, discharge planning as applicable, and referrals to other healthcare team members as needed.
  • Provide care for patients across the age continuum consistent with education and certification.
  • Identify unstable or complex hospitalized-patient care situations and facilitate appropriate intervention in the clinic or hospital setting.
  • Recognize emergency situations and initiate effective emergency care.
  • Evaluate general medicine patients and coordinate follow-up, procedures, and tests in the ambulatory setting as applicable.
  • Assist with collecting outcome measures as applicable.
  • Apply critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning to identify, evaluate, and manage the individual needs of patients and families.
  • Use equipment safely.
  • Base decisions and actions on relevant scientific principles, standards of care, and research findings.
  • Use teaching and learning theory and appropriate teaching strategies to educate nursing staff, hospital staff, students, patients, families, and the community.
  • Promote learning by responding to patient and family preferences, priorities, and readiness to learn.
  • Update professional knowledge throughout the year and complete identified clinical competencies.
  • Serve as a resource for staff caring for hospitalized patients and provide educational programs to professional and paraprofessional personnel in the area of expertise.
  • Participate in community programs and distribute relevant literature as appropriate.
  • Document each patient's plan of care, interventions, and evaluations clearly and concisely in the medical record in accordance with approved hospital and WVU Medicine policies and documentation standards.
  • Collaborate with leaders and staff to achieve improvements in patient outcomes and care.
  • Provide leadership in developing and implementing changes in the cardiology practice that improve patient outcomes.
  • Work collaboratively with medical and nursing staff to solve problems and provide professional support.
  • Initiate and participate in interdisciplinary approaches to patient care, program development, and education, and serve as a professional role model.
  • Promote and practice innovation in the expanded role of delivering care to inpatients and families during hospitalization and in ambulatory settings.
  • Participate in and provide leadership for committees and task forces.
  • Document hours and submit billing reports as appropriate.
  • Review and interpret cardiology data from patient registries and clinical and financial reports, including length of stay, access to care, and cost per case, and recommend or implement changes as necessary.
  • Participate in clinical trials and research studies with the principal investigator.
  • Assist hospitalist faculty, administrators, and directors in collecting outcome measures.
  • Perform other assigned duties and projects.
Desired Qualifications
  • Acute-care or hospitalist experience is preferred for either the Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant pathway.
  • For the Nurse Practitioner pathway, Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNP or AGACNP) qualification is preferred, but Family Nurse Practitioners (FNPs) will be considered.
  • For the Physician Assistant pathway, master's-level education as a Medical/Surgical Physician Assistant is preferred.
