Argentina issues two-week ultimatum to UK over Sea Lion oil project, threatens international arbitration.

Argentina issues two-week ultimatum to UK over Sea Lion oil project, threatens international arbitration. Argentina formally notified the United Kingdom on September 28, 2026, to halt all hydrocarbon activities linked to the Sea Lion project in the North Malvinas Basin within 14 days or face international arbitration under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. The escalation represents the fourth legal and diplomatic action in 25 days targeting offshore oil development in disputed South Atlantic waters, with parallel sanctions announced against British firm Thales UK Limited for unauthorized flights between the Falklands and Punta Arenas, Chile. President Javier Milei instructed the Foreign Ministry and legal teams to initiate arbitration proceedings under Annex VII of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), specifically targeting the Sea Lion project operated by Rockhopper Exploration and Navitas Petroleum approximately 220 kilometers north of the islands. The Argentine government argues that unilateral hydrocarbon exploitation violates UN General Assembly resolutions 2065 and 31/49, which recognize the sovereignty dispute and prohibit modifications to the status quo during negotiations. Argentina contends the project falls within its sovereign continental shelf jurisdiction extending to 350 nautical miles under UNCLOS provisions. The ultimatum warns that absent UK compliance, Argentina will petition the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea for provisional measures to preserve its continental shelf rights. Chancellor Pablo Quirno characterized the move as unprecedented, stating the government would seek interim tribunal orders while the arbitration panel assembles. The legal strategy follows a September 16 injunctive order by federal judge Mariel Borruto directing the oil companies to cease construction activities pending environmental review, though Rockhopper and Navitas jointly stated they expect no material project impact. London rejected the arbitration claim through Foreign Office Minister Uma Kumaran, who defended the islanders' right to develop natural resources and questioned Argentina's reliability as a UK partner. The UK government maintains that Sea Lion operations comply with local Falklands legislation and international law, invoking the 2013 referendum in which 99.8 percent of islanders voted to remain a British Overseas Territory. British Defense Secretary Wes Streeting reinforced that position with statements affirming military readiness to defend the islands, noting scheduled Typhoon fighter upgrades by November 2027. The diplomatic clash intensified after Milei's September UN General Assembly speech renewed sovereignty claims. Argentina simultaneously announced sanctions against Thales UK Limited for allegedly operating flights between the islands and Chile without Argentine authorization, tied to a business delegation meeting Chilean suppliers. The Foreign Ministry is separately exploring US-mediated negotiations, contingent on British acceptance. The Sea Lion project carries significant economic stakes, with UK authorities estimating potential royalties of $2 billion over three decades of production. Argentina's September 3 decree 868/2026 empowered the Foreign Ministry to sanction unauthorized hydrocarbon operators and imposed disclosure requirements on companies seeking benefits under the RIGI large-investment incentive regime. A subsequent September 8 criminal complaint invoked Law 26.659 against Navitas, building on 2022 sanctions that yielded no operational interruption. The two-week deadline expires mid-October, positioning the dispute for potential International Tribunal consideration before year-end if the UK maintains its current stance on resource development in the contested basin.

October 1, 2026 at 7:28 a.m. * Thales believes that frontier models call for a revolution in the pace of cyber defence: while the fundamentals of cybersecurity remain valid, they must now be executed at machine speed, without ever relinquishing human judgement over the decisions that matter. * Today, Thales unveiled an end-to-end framework to help critical organisations counter a new generation of cyber threats, spanning application security, detection and response, a global cyber defence platform, continuous evaluation and critical-asset resilience. * As adversaries attack, adapt and multiply at machine speed, simply stacking isolated tools is no longer enough. Thales positions AI-driven, automated defence under human oversight as an essential evolution of cyber defence. PARIS - At the Thales Cyber Summit held in Paris (France), Thales today unveiled a global response to the challenges created by Frontier AI models. Reasoning, autonomy and scale of these cutting-edge systems far exceed previous generations, and can accelerate vulnerability discovery, exploit development and cyberattack execution at machine speed. This marks a shift in AI from a tool that assists humans to one that acts autonomously, reshaping the threat landscape for organisations, the first of which those operating critical systems. "Frontier AI models represent a new inflection point for cybersecurity. The challenge is not only technological; it is about helping organisations act before risks materialize, understand the implications, assess their exposure, and, if an attack still succeeds, ensure resilience and quick recovery. By combining advanced technologies with strategic and operational cybersecurity services, our ambition is to give customers the insight, expertise and continuous support they need to navigate this new reality with confidence," said Philippe Vallée, Executive Vice-President, Cybersecurity & Digital Identity, Thales. Thales believes that the combination of advanced technology and human expertise is essential to interpret emerging threats, understand exposure, make informed decisions and translate them into effective operational action. Technology alone will not be enough to address this shift, as capabilities evolve at machine speed. Helping customers move from reactive measures to a continuously tested resilience model This service-led framework is structured around five interconnected building blocks: securing the application estate, AI-augmented detection and response, a converged cyberdefence platform, continuous testing and risk evaluation, and the protection and resilience of critical assets. Their strength lies not in any single component but in their automated interconnection, allowing threat intelligence, vulnerabilities, exposure, detection, remediation and proof of effectiveness to circulate continuously across the whole chain. Strategic partnerships with leading technology providers Thales works with leading technology providers to enhance the assessment and mitigation of advanced AI-powered cyber threats. Through a single trusted partner, customers gain privileged access to state-of-the-art AI capabilities designed specifically for cybersecurity. As a member of Google's Fairwind program, Thales will enable critical industries to benefit from Google's latest cyber AI innovations, including Gemini 3.8 Flash Cyber and the CodeMender harness. Technology & Innovation 01/10/2026 04:08 Thales and Landis+Gyr enable smarter, remotely managed connectivity for smart meter fleets. * Thales, a global leader in cybersecurity and IoT connectivity management, and Landis+Gyr, a global energy technology leader grid edge intelligence and energy management, today announced a strategic collaboration to enable secure, scalable and future-ready cellular connectivity for smart meter deployments across North America. * Thales will provide Landis+Gyr with eSIM technology and advanced IoT connectivity management to support the digital transformation of utilities by simplifying and securing remote management of smart meter fleets throughout their entire lifecycle. * The solution - combined with Simetric's single pane of glass - gives utilities a unified view of connectivity operations across their devices, enabling centralized monitoring and control of large-scale deployments to reduce field interventions and improve operational efficiency globally. AUSTIN, Texas-BUSINESS WIRE- As utilities modernize their infrastructure, smart meters are becoming an increasingly important part of the connected energy ecosystem. Landis+Gyr serves more than 2,000 utilities worldwide and has more than 180 million connected intelligent devices in the field. In North America alone, the installed base of smart electricity meters is expected to grow from 152.4 million in 2024 to 180.9 million by 2030, according to Berg Insight. This is where the latest generation of Thales eSIM technology is supporting the increasing need for cellular IoT. Compliant with the GSMA's SGP.32 specification, it enables remotely managing connectivity on IoT devices, allowing network profiles to be provisioned, changed or managed over the air. By reducing reliance on physical SIM replacement and supporting interoperability across the IoT ecosystem, it provides a foundation for more flexible and scalable connectivity management. Thales' eSIM solution, combined with Simetric's "single pane of glass" platform, simplifies connectivity provisioning and acts as a control tower for the entire fleet, giving utilities a centralized view to monitor, manage, analyse and orchestratetheir connected assets; helping them support the continued growth of massive IoT deployments. For smart metering, this can translate into a significant operational shift: connectivity can be managed remotely for an individual meter or an entire fleet, helping utilities reduce field interventions, adapt to changing network conditions, strengthen the resilience of their infrastructure and maintain service continuity over its lifetime. Importantly, the solution supports both SIM- and eSIM-enabled devices, providing a unified view of network operations across the entire fleet, regardless of the technology deployed. "No utility wants to replace thousands of devices just because technology changes," saidRoque Martin, Senior Vice President of Connected Platforms at Landis+Gyr. "Our collaboration with Thales helps solve that challenge by giving utilities the flexibility to adapt connectivity over time without swapping out hardware in the field. As this capability becomes part of our Revelo(R) and Surent(R) platforms, customers can choose the network approach that works best for them today and adjust as their needs evolve in the future." "Thales latest IoT eSIM technology lays the foundation for scalable and flexible smart metering connectivity, but its real value lies in turning connectivity into a strategic operational asset," said Nicolas Bouverot, VP Mobile Connectivity Solutions at Thales. "As deployments scale, utilities need automation, a single pane of glass and real-time control across millions of connected devices. Together with Simetric, we help utilities move from simply managing connectivity to intelligently orchestrating it; ensuring the right meter is connected to the right network at the right time throughout its lifecycle." Thales brings extensive expertise in secure connectivity and eSIM management to the IoT market. The company is recognized as a global leader in eSIM subscription management, with solutions supporting more than 450 mobile network operators and more than 200 OEMs across consumer and IoT markets.
