Requirements
  • A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • Seven years of progressively responsible experience in the assigned trades, including at least four years in a lead or supervisory capacity, is required.
  • A valid driver's license with fewer than six points is required.
  • Candidates must have comprehensive knowledge and skill in the methods and techniques of the assigned trades and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration regulations related to the trade area.
  • Candidates must have thorough knowledge and practical skill in electronics, hydraulics, mechanics as used in maintenance work, basic mathematics, and principles of supervision in the maintenance trades.
  • Candidates must be skilled in caring for and storing equipment and supplies; using and maintaining trade tools and equipment; and reading, interpreting, and working from blueprints, schematics, drawings, and specifications.
  • Candidates must be able to communicate orally and in writing; supervise and train skilled and unskilled employees; plan and organize maintenance work; assess the sufficiency of cost estimates; prepare specifications for tools, equipment, materials, and supplies; and prepare summaries and reports.
  • Candidates must be able to work around fixed equipment and machinery, from ladders and scaffolding, and in confined spaces, hazardous or irritating environments, and adverse weather or temperature conditions; wear personal protective equipment; handle equipment, tools, and supplies or exert force up to 70 pounds; and manipulate multiple machinery and equipment controls concurrently.
  • Additional related experience and formal education that provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may substitute for education or experience on a year-for-year basis; 30 college credits equal one year of experience.
  • Selected candidates may be subject to medical inquiries or examinations to determine their ability to perform the job.
  • A valid Maryland Non-commercial Class C driver's license or equivalent may be required.
  • Employees may be required to train to work with asbestos.
  • Employees assigned to work with equipment containing CFC refrigerants must obtain and maintain valid certification in accordance with federal law.
  • The successful candidate must complete employment eligibility verification and provide documents establishing identity and work authorization within the required timeframe.
Responsibilities
  • Serve as supervisor for the community maintenance program in assigned residential areas.
  • Oversee and evaluate daily work plans and execute preventive maintenance programs carried out by front-line staff throughout the year.
  • Assign activities and maintenance tasks to staff, provide training and daily supervision, evaluate operations, and perform skilled and unskilled labor.
  • Supervise seven or more employees and maintain and repair a wide range of equipment in assigned residential areas.
  • Drive a state vehicle to inspect work.
  • As needed, shovel snow and handle snow-moving equipment, including snowblowers and plows.
  • Work on-site; work a flexible schedule of either five eight-hour days, Monday through Friday, or four ten-hour days with varied days off; and perform evening or weekend work when required.
  • Report to work, including overtime, during catastrophic weather or other emergencies when the University is closed, to perform maintenance and cleanup tasks.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience supervising mechanical trades is preferred.
