Requirements
- A high school diploma and two years of post-high-school education, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, are required.
- Fluency in English and Spanish with strong verbal and written skills in both languages is required.
- Knowledge of human anatomy, physiology, pathology, clinical tests, and procedures in the working languages is required.
- Completion of a 40-hour training course in medical interpreting is required.
- Translation certification is required.
Responsibilities
- Provide bilingual translation services in the target language or to Limited English Proficient patients, their families, and others throughout the University.
- Provide interpreting services for University of Rochester Medical Center clinical and professional staff, patients, and family members or significant others during medical and non-medical healthcare encounters.
- Manage communication flow autonomously and efficiently between source and target languages across inpatient and ambulatory clinical specialties.
- Carry a hospital-assigned pager and respond to pages within the applicable New York State response times; provide services over varied shifts, including required on-call weekend coverage.
- Interpret prescheduled and pager-received assignments in a timely and professional manner according to hospital policy.
- Assess encounter goals and situational context in collaboration with clinical healthcare providers and non-clinical hospital staff.
- Establish communication ground rules and methods, explain the interpreter's role, and brief healthcare professionals on relevant knowledge about the patient or encounter.
- Assess and recommend effective communication methods for patients with communication barriers, altered mental status, or other special communication needs, and verify the patient's preferred language.
- Select the appropriate communication mode, including consecutive, simultaneous, or sight translation.
- Propose the most suitable service-delivery modality, including in-person, video, or telephone, based on patient needs and unforeseen communication barriers.
- Debrief healthcare professionals after encounters as necessary to optimize understanding and provide linguistic and cultural insights.
- Monitor linguistic misunderstandings and recommend adjustments to formality and communication style.
- Prioritize, triage, and respond to multiple service requests according to critical urgency and patient acuity.
- Assess cross-cultural impacts on communication between patients and healthcare providers during complex interpersonal encounters.
- Monitor cultural misunderstandings and devise appropriate interventions to empower patients to participate in care decisions.
- Confirm possible cultural misunderstandings with all parties to avoid assumptions, disrespect, or immediate harm.
- Facilitate understanding of cultural differences and promote direct communication to build trust and enhance patient satisfaction.
- Inform patients about available supports, such as social workers, case managers, care coordinators, financial coordinators, and chaplains, as appropriate.
- Promote inclusive and equitable communication during interactions with all parties.
- Provide interdisciplinary education to healthcare team members for effective communication during encounters, patient training, and teaching.
- Facilitate meaningful access to University of Rochester Medical Center health programs for patients with limited English proficiency in compliance with applicable legal, regulatory, and accreditation standards.
- Identify interpreting service needs based on patient-provider dynamics and best practices, and inform program leadership of recommendations for service enhancements.
- Apply national healthcare interpreter codes of ethics and standards of practice, Joint Commission standards, department policies, safety protocols, and infection-control standards.
- Complete service-provision documentation in the electronic medical record.
- Disclose and justify potential limitations, conflicts, or need for recusal appropriately and promptly.
- Support and uphold patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA.
- Intervene impartially and transparently within professional boundaries to protect the autonomy, dignity, and safety of all parties.
- Maintain interpreter performance-based skills through hiring assessments or direct observation.
- Participate in interpreter webinars, conferences, annual training, and self-directed learning for professional development.
- Complete scheduled training and required staff activities, including annual policy and procedure training, annual health updates, staff meetings, and other required activities.
- Complete documentation, paperwork, and administrative duties, including end-of-interaction electronic medical record entries, database entries, certification updates, professional development transcripts, and other assigned paperwork.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
- An Associate's degree is preferred.
- A Bachelor's degree is preferred.
- One year of interpreting experience in a healthcare setting is preferred.
- Certification in healthcare interpreting through CCHI or IMIA is strongly preferred at the time of hire or within 18 months of hire.
