  • At least 5 years of industrial or commercial engineering experience in mission-critical facilities, including data centers, power generation, or oil and gas facilities.
  • A Bachelor's Degree in Civil, Mechanical, Chemical, or Environmental Engineering, Water Resources Planning, or equivalent experience.
  • At least 5 cumulative years of experience in water engineering, water resource management, or industrial water and wastewater infrastructure projects.
  • Experience analyzing water chemistry and conventional or membrane water treatment technologies for industrial applications, with practical application of environmental regulations and industry standards for water quality management.
  • Understanding of physical, chemical, and biological practices for treating industrial and reclaimed water, including hydraulics, pump selection and sizing, and process equipment.
Responsibilities
  • Provide full life-cycle support to AWS data centers from design inception through site improvement and maintenance.
  • Influence all aspects of water-based cooling systems infrastructure.
  • Assess and update existing water infrastructure systems while developing new solutions.
  • Evaluate current system performance, identify retrofit opportunities, and implement improvements through field troubleshooting and best-practice approaches.
  • Improve operational best practices, guidelines, and runbooks.
  • Collaborate with design, construction, commissioning, operations, vendors, and water treatment specialists to ensure operations teams can operate and maintain infrastructure.
  • Troubleshoot site and equipment failures, conduct root cause analysis, and create corrective action documentation.
  • Directly support operational issues through ad hoc training, complex operating procedure reviews for critical equipment, and event support.
  • Own the conceptual design for existing data center upgrades and design solutions that add capacity, improve availability, and increase efficiency and sustainability.
  • Interface with data center operations, data center design engineering, server hardware, and environmental health and safety teams to promote standards that maintain service consistency and reliability.
  • Develop innovative solutions for AWS data centers.
  • Work on concurrent projects, including projects in multiple geographical regions.
  • Initiate and lead engineering audits, including on-site visits within Amazon data centers, and produce reports outlining risks with recommended mitigations and remediations.
  • Act as resident engineer during new construction projects and support construction, commissioning, and turnover.
  • Provide regional technical advice as the primary engineering resource when needed.
  • Lead projects to fit out data centers to meet customer needs as the data center fleet expands.
  • Prioritize activities supporting data center capacity availability and safety.
  • Manage engineering projects and consultants.
  • Build working relationships with operations, controls, construction, design, commissioning, product management, and technical program management stakeholders.
  • Work on projects locally and globally.
Desired Qualifications
  • Professional Engineer license.
  • Experience with building codes and regulations for the relevant region.
  • Experience carrying design concepts through exploration, development, and into deployment or mass production.
  • Experience reading, interpreting, and creating construction drawings, specifications, and submittal documents.
  • Experience as a resident engineer or hands-on field design consultant or owner's engineer.
  • Experience reading and interpreting construction drawings, specifications, submittal documents, and applicable building codes.
  • Basic understanding of mechanical and electrical equipment and design related to data centers, including uninterruptible power sources, diesel generators, electrical switchgear, power distribution units, variable frequency drives, automatic and static transfer switches, air-cooled and water-cooled chillers, pumps, cooling towers, heat exchangers, computer room air handlers, fans, air economizers, and water treatment.
  • Data analytics skills, data querying skills and languages, scripting, and comfort working with large amounts of data in evolving environments.

Amazon eyes $8B Nvidia chip sale-leaseback as AI debt reaches $88B amid 'brewing crisis' warning

Ed Zitron warns that private credit funding AI data centres represents a "brewing crisis" as borrowing costs rise and project delays mount. His comments come as Amazon considers moving $8bn of Nvidia chips into an investor-funded vehicle, then leasing them back. Goldman Sachs tallies $88bn of lower-rated AI-related borrowing this year. CoreWeave reported $35.6bn of debt as of 30 June, having relied heavily on private credit including an $8.5bn facility anchored by Blackstone Credit & Insurance. Amazon pledges $1B for communities hosting AI data centres amid local backlash

Amazon has pledged to invest $1 billion in communities surrounding its AI data centres, according to Amazon Web Services head Matt Garman. The commitment aims to fund local infrastructure such as schools and improve perceptions of data centres. Amazon also announced it will no longer require non-disclosure agreements when negotiating with communities, a practice other tech companies have similarly abandoned. Amazon's Project Aurelian aims to reach 95% of US ZIP codes without postal service

Amazon has developed Project Aurelian, an internal plan to deliver packages without the US Postal Service, according to a document reported on 1 October. The fallback strategy aims to cover 95% of US ZIP codes, accounting for 99.9% of demand, through new delivery warehouses and local partnerships. The plan affects North America, Amazon's largest segment, which generated $426.3 billion in revenue in fiscal 2025. Management expects approximately $220 billion in capital spending for 2026, primarily for AI and AWS. Over the past 12 months, capital expenditure of $173 billion exceeded operating cash flow of $161.4 billion. No cost estimates for Project Aurelian have been published. The plan emerged as contract negotiations with the Postal Service became strained. Amazon's third-quarter 2026 results, expected around 28 October, may provide financial details about the delivery network expansion.

Amazon seeks to offload $8B of Nvidia chips to investors through financing vehicle

Amazon is exploring a plan to transfer approximately $8 billion worth of Nvidia AI chips into a special-purpose financing vehicle, according to the Financial Times. The e-commerce and cloud giant would then lease the chips back, shifting ownership and part of the financing burden to outside investors. The proposed structure would offer investors up to a 10% equity stake in the vehicle, which would raise debt to finance the chips. This asset-light approach comes as Amazon's AI infrastructure spending pressures cash flows, with trailing-12-month free cash flow turning negative at $7.6 billion. The chips are being installed across data centres in at least five US states. Amazon shares edged 0.6% higher in premarket trading following the report.
