Requirements
  • Graduation from an accredited high school or GED program.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing and establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Must obtain First Aid/CPR certification within 90 days of hire.
  • Must obtain certification required by applicable facility or department standards within six months of employment.
  • Must possess a valid Texas driver's license with a good driving record.
  • Must pass an extensive background investigation.
  • Must complete mandatory pre-employment drug testing and be subject to random, unannounced drug and/or alcohol testing during employment.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age for applicable positions.
  • Must pass all portions of the Juvenile Academy, including physical and written portions, to continue employment, or meet all applicable PREA and Ethics standards for specific positions.
  • Must be physically able to perform handling-with-care techniques, including takedowns, chasing, and restraining youth.
  • Must be able to restrain and/or chase youths.
  • May be required to use a vehicle to transport youths.
  • Must be able to work shift changes, mandatory overtime, double shifts, holdovers, and call-backs as required in a 24-hour facility.
  • Must be able to work in an emotionally demanding and stressful environment involving juveniles who may have committed dangerous or aggressive acts.
Responsibilities
  • Provide day-to-day direct supervision to youths in a 24-hour detention facility in compliance with departmental policies, procedures, and applicable standards.
  • Provide individual and group counseling to youths to promote personal awareness of responsibilities and alternatives.
  • Make critical judgments and decisions during crises or potentially dangerous situations when the supervisor is absent, inform the supervisor of problems and actions taken, and document those actions.
  • Enforce facility rules, discipline youths, document behavior and other information, and forward documentation to appropriate personnel.
  • Serve as backup staff and perform duties such as administering medications, transporting youths to appointments, processing intake assessments or discharges, and disciplining youths.
  • Conduct inspections, rounds, and drills, including room checks and physical searches of youths.
  • Transport youths to and from appointments.
  • Coordinate and provide daily educational and entertainment programs and activities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
