Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Completion of Medical Assistant training in an approved program, or one year of patient-care experience in a physician office practice or hospital setting, is required.
  • Current CPR or Basic Life Support certification from a course accredited by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross is required before the first day of employment.
  • Current Medical Assistant certification and maintenance of certified status through an approved certifying organization are required.
  • The position is security-sensitive and subject to criminal history record information review under Texas Education Code §51.215.
Responsibilities
  • Take, record, and report patient vital signs using medical equipment and perform low-complexity procedures, including visual acuity, developmental or musculoskeletal screening, point-of-care testing, phlebotomy, electrocardiogram testing, and other approved clinic-specific diagnostic testing.
  • Escort or transport patients to exam rooms, treatment rooms, or other directed areas.
  • Document completion of patient-care tasks in medical records and reinforce education provided by physicians or nurses, seeking assistance as appropriate.
  • Prepare exam rooms, facilitate the use of diagnostic equipment, and ensure the availability of patient information, diagnostic results, and medical records.
  • Monitor autoclave temperatures weekly, perform point-of-care testing quality assurance, and complete monthly compliance audit reports as directed.
  • Serve as a preceptor and resource for newly hired medical assistants and medical assistant externs and participate in their integration into the department.
  • Schedule patient appointments, pre-certify procedures, and answer patient phones by collecting information for nurse triage as directed.
  • Inspect equipment and facilities visually and physically to ensure patient safety and proper functioning.
  • Serve as a clinic safety officer when assigned by verifying employees’ knowledge of fire safety and the evacuation plan.
  • Confirm that appropriate patient consent and authorization forms are signed for research or medical treatment.
  • Maintain current customer-service, clinical, and technical skills through training programs and procedures and participate in the annual skills competency review.
  • Maintain adequate supplies for the assigned work area.
  • Provide occasional working supervision to non-licensed medical or clerical support personnel for clerical or other non-clinical activities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
