Requirements
  • At least 15 years of software engineering experience focused on backend systems and data infrastructure.
  • Strong theoretical and practical knowledge of compilers, abstract syntax trees, eBNF, and query planning.
  • In-depth understanding of SQL, query optimization, and the internal workings of columnar databases.
  • Expert proficiency in Java, including multithreading, asynchronous input/output, networking, and memory management.
  • Proven experience designing distributed caching layers and managing state across microservices.
  • Ability to decompose complex data problems into scalable architectural components.
  • Clear verbal and written communication skills and a strong tendency to document thoughts and architectural ideas.
  • A rigorous approach to software craftsmanship, including testing, telemetry, and performance benchmarking.
  • At least one year of experience using AI coding agents to enhance development productivity.
Responsibilities
  • Design the architecture and implement end-to-end a high-performance OLAP query engine and semantic layer.
  • Design a custom JSON-based OLAP query language; define eBNF grammars and build a translation layer that converts functional formulas and DSL requests into optimized execution plans.
  • Implement and oversee generation of highly optimized SQL for columnar databases, including ClickHouse, SingleStore, and DuckDB.
  • Architect representations of multidimensional data models within columnar structures to ensure efficient data retrieval and aggregation.
  • Implement custom-function logic and determine the optimal balance between SQL push-down and application-layer execution.
  • Design and implement distributed multidimensional caching using shared-memory systems such as Redis.
  • Build and maintain high-performance Java microservices using Micronaut or Spring Boot and Project Loom virtual threads to handle high-concurrency read loads.
  • Manage system-level performance, including connection pooling, array pooling, and off-heap memory management.
  • Apply Java garbage collector expertise, including ZGC and Shenandoah, to maintain low-latency response times.
  • Use AI coding agents and tools to accelerate software development, from prototyping to debugging.
  • Document architectural decisions, design patterns, and technical specifications.
  • Serve as the primary technical authority on query engine internals and guide complex systems-level challenges.

Planful has launched Planner Assistant, an AI tool that generates financial forecasts and detects anomalies using natural language queries.
