Requirements
  • Completion of an occupational therapy educational program recognized by the Oregon Occupational Therapy Licensing Board.
  • A limited permit or Oregon occupational therapy license must be obtained at the time of appointment.
  • A Basic Life Support certificate is required within 30 days of hire or before independent practice, whichever comes first, for positions involving patient care.
  • Ability to lift 40 pounds, repeatedly carry equipment weighing more than 5 pounds, and walk extensively on hard and soft surfaces.
  • Ability to bend and reach frequently to navigate medical equipment or perform treatment.
  • Knowledge of inpatient medical environments and equipment such as oxygen, ventilation, and respiratory apparatuses.
  • Ability to respond quickly and appropriately to urgent medical situations.
Responsibilities
  • Prioritize patient care needs based on medical necessity, discharge plans, medical stability, and appropriateness for rehabilitation.
  • Evaluate patients to determine referral appropriateness and rehabilitation potential.
  • Establish treatment goals and objectives within the scope of acute care rehabilitation, including functional outcomes, quantitative measures, and target dates.
  • Develop, implement, monitor, and adjust treatment plans based on patient progress.
  • Document evaluations, treatment, and other patient contacts in the medical record in compliance with DNV, OHSU, Oregon Administrative Rules, and third-party payer criteria.
  • Enter accurate service codes and bill patient-care time accurately.
  • Provide time-efficient consultation, request orders, and guide the patient’s care team regarding activity and prevention of complications.
  • Perform and document skilled patient care activities, including direct treatment and caregiver, patient, and family education.
  • Fabricate and adjust splints to meet patient needs.
  • Communicate patient needs and promote carryover of strategies and precautions with nursing staff and other caregivers.
  • Update the care team’s recommendations regarding continuing rehabilitation needs and post-discharge plans.
  • Direct, support, and supervise COTAs, aides, and volunteers as required.
  • Develop and enhance patient-care programs and patient outcomes in the specialty area.
  • Provide evidence-based clinical instruction and supervision for occupational therapy students.
  • Ensure students complete weekly goals and facilitate achievement of affiliation objectives.
  • Provide regular feedback and complete student evaluations on schedule.
  • Participate in supervision and training for students from other disciplines.
  • Collaborate with patients, families, and medical teams during multidisciplinary rounds and recommend post-discharge rehabilitation.
  • Request and participate in patient and family conferences, representing the department and advocating for rehabilitation needs.
  • Assist the care team in problem-solving related to vision, activities of daily living, and cognition impairments to enhance patient safety.
  • Educate physicians, fellows, residents, and other healthcare providers about rehabilitation, medical necessity, appropriate referrals, and expected rehabilitation outcomes and intensity.
  • Provide timely, courteous, and cost-efficient communication to patients, families, and healthcare team members.
  • Address complaints and problems promptly and involve management when indicated.
  • Meet hospital documentation and productivity standards.
  • Participate in weekend shift rotation when scheduled.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience in an acute hospital, skilled nursing facility, or inpatient rehabilitation setting, or completion of a related student affiliation.
