Gaming can't afford more GTA VI-sized games as layoffs hit despite hits like Battlefield 6's $400M budget

Grand Theft Auto VI arrives in November, 13 years after its predecessor. Some estimates put preorder revenue at $1 billion to $4 billion, despite an $80 price tag. Rockstar has not confirmed the budget. The article argues that rivals should not copy its scale. Layoffs keep hitting studios after successful launches: Battlefield 6 sold 7 million copies in three days on a reported $400 million budget, yet publisher EA still cut jobs. Xbox announced 3,200 cuts in July 2026. The alternative is smaller "AA" games. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 sold 8 million copies as of April 2026 on a budget under $10 million, which let its studio avoid layoffs. Investors, however, still favour GTA-scale bets.

How many people are needed to develop a game like GTA 6?

How many people are needed to develop a game like GTA 6? 19 Oct 2026 0 comments Rockstar Games has assembled a giant team of professionals to develop GTA 6, one of the most anticipated releases in the video game industry. With a forecast of 40 million units sold, how many people work on the game daily? A larger team to avoid the mistakes of the past. The development of GTA 6 is taking place on an unprecedented scale for Rockstar. In 2018, when Red Dead Redemption II came to market, the studio had 2,441 workers. In August this year, that number had already risen to 4,711 people, spread across 12 offices. The company's growth comes at a time when the video game sector is facing successive waves of layoffs. Take-Two, Rockstar's parent company, announced cost-reduction measures in 2024, but the studio continued hiring, including in India and through the opening of a new space in Los Angeles. One of the priorities is to avoid the working conditions associated with the development of Red Dead Redemption II, which was marked by weeks that could reach 60 hours. Despite the reinforced team and more realistic deadline management, the production of GTA 6 continued to face difficulties, especially in the creation and animation of secondary characters. The delays and the million-dollar figures. The complexity of the project contributed to successive schedule changes. Initially planned for 2025, GTA 6 went through several dates before being scheduled for November 19, after a new delay. The financial scale matches the game's ambition. For fiscal year 2027, Take-Two forecasts net bookings revenue of between $8 billion and $8.2 billion, above the $6.72 billion recorded in the previous period. Projections point to around 40 million copies of GTA 6 sold during that fiscal year. Bank of America estimates that the title could generate $3.44 billion in revenue. Even so, the total production cost remains shrouded in speculation. Jennifer Kolbe, head of publishing at Rockstar, rejected the claim that the budget exceeded $1.5 billion. Expectations grow, but security remains a concern. Public interest has already translated into impressive numbers. The first trailer surpassed 93 million views on YouTube in the first 24 hours. Later, a 27-minute presentation made available exclusively on Netflix reached 31.1 million weekly views and led in 87 of the 93 countries analyzed by the platform. Protecting the project also gained importance after the unauthorized release of videos in 2022. Since 2024, workers have been required to spend five days a week in the offices, while GTA 6 developers lost remote access to servers. Despite these measures, another leak emerged in August. In October 2025, Rockstar dismissed 34 workers, most of them associated with the IWGB union. The company justified the decisions by citing the sharing of confidential information on a Discord server, a situation that caused controversy. Ad. Share:

GTA VI reportedly features significantly narrower roads than GTA V.

GTA VI reportedly features significantly narrower roads than GTA V. Rockstar Games' upcoming open-world action-adventure game, GTA VI, features significantly narrower roads than its predecessor, GTA V. In his latest video, Bloomberg investigative journalist Jason Schreier talked about his recent visit to Rockstar North's Edinburgh studio and interviews with several senior developers involved in the production of the highly anticipated title. Aaron Garbut, the art director and one of the heads of development on GTA VI, told him that the decision to make roads narrower and traffic denser than in GTA V was made early during development. Unlike the sprawling streets in the latter, which allow players to speed through traffic with relative ease, the upcoming entry aims to deliver a more realistic urban driving experience. Schreier noted that GTA V's wide roads often make driving feel more like a racing game than navigating a real city. GTA VI's narrower streets and heavier traffic, meanwhile, aims to make traveling through its fictional version of Miami more challenging and immersive. Rockstar conducted extensive research trips to Miami, including police ride-alongs, to help build the game's setting and atmosphere. Garbut also explained that this design decision had major consequences for the game's development. Narrower roads and denser traffic require more buildings and additional environmental detail, requiring a much different approach to building the open world. Some Rockstar artists have worked on GTA VI's map since 2015, spending an extraordinary amount of time invested in its design. Schreier also discussed how Rockstar's development process evolved over the years. The studio initially diverted substantial resources towards Red Dead Redemption 2, using the experience and underlying systems developed to then work on GTA VI. However, the development team experienced a challenging period between 2019 and 2022 while deciding how much realism to carry over from Red Dead Redemption 2 without losing Grand Theft Auto's more arcade-style gameplay. Other details shared by Schreier included Rockstar's experimentation with GTA VI's weapon wheel UI. After spending a long time exploring alternatives to the traditional weapon wheel, the development team decided to return to the familiar system.

Rockstar nearly doubles staff to 4,711 for GTA 6, with analysts eyeing $3B in sales

Rockstar Games nearly doubled its staff to 4,711 across 12 studios while building Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6), up from 2,441 when Red Dead Redemption 2 launched in 2018. The game, delayed twice, now launches on November 19 after more than eight years of work. Bloomberg reports analysts expect about 40 million sales and $3 billion in revenue within four months of launch. Even so, parent Take-Two Interactive closed Friday at $205.28, down 21.86% over 12 months. Take-Two guides to $8 billion to $8.2 billion in fiscal 2027 net bookings. Net bookings fell 3% to $1.39 billion in the June quarter. StoneX analyst Mike Hickey keeps a Buy rating and a $300 price target. Rockstar says it cut excessive overtime, though not entirely, and believes the work could shorten development of its next major release.

Love in Vice City: GTA 6's launch trailer trades party chaos for a Bonnie-and-Clyde love story.

Love in Vice City: GTA 6's launch trailer trades party chaos for a Bonnie-and-Clyde love story. Rockstar Games has released the official Grand Theft Auto 6 launch trailer, and anyone expecting another neon-drenched montage of Vice City excess is in for a surprise. Arriving just two weeks before the game's long-awaited debut, the new trailer is a noticeably quieter, more emotional affair - and it might just tell Turgame exactly what kind of story Rockstar is preparing to tell. A very different vibe for GTA 6. As PC Gamer points out, this one has "a very different vibe" than anything Turgame has seen from the game so far. While the record-breaking debut trailer in 2023 and May's story trailer leaned hard into sun-soaked hedonism - beach parties, viral social-media chaos, and party-ready needle-drop soundtracks - the launch trailer pulls the focus inward. It centers squarely on the relationship between protagonists Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, the modern-day Bonnie-and-Clyde duo at the heart of GTA 6. Jason and Lucia take center stage. The footage lingers on intimate, cinematic moments between the pair: quiet conversations, stolen glances, and the creeping tension of a life built on crime. Lucia, fresh out of prison and hungry for a better life, and Jason, a former soldier who drifted into Florida's underworld, are presented less as action heroes and more as two desperate people clinging to each other while the state of Leonida threatens to swallow them whole. It's a bold tone for a series famous for satire and spectacle - and it hints that Rockstar is aiming for genuine emotional weight alongside the mayhem. Welcome back to Leonida. Of course, it wouldn't be GTA without the setting stealing a few scenes. The trailer sweeps across the greater state of Leonida: the neon skyline of Vice City, the swamps and waterways of the Everglades-inspired backcountry, roadside motels, airboats, and faded small towns. Familiar faces from the earlier story trailer also flash by, a reminder that Jason and Lucia's romance is only one thread in Rockstar's sprawling crime tapestry. The launch trailer wasn't the only bombshell. Rockstar didn't stop at the trailer. Alongside it, the studio confirmed that GTA 6 has officially gone gold - meaning development is complete and the game is locked in for its November 19, 2025 release. Even more surprisingly, Rockstar announced that a Nintendo Switch 2 version is in development and slated for 2026, a genuine shock for a franchise that has skipped Nintendo hardware for decades. It's a coordinated marketing blitz that signals just how massive Rockstar expects this launch to be. Where to play GTA 6 at launch (and the big PC question). Grand Theft Auto 6 launches on November 19, 2025 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. As PC Gamer is quick to note, there's no PC version at launch - a familiar sting for keyboard-and-mouse players. Rockstar hasn't confirmed a date for PC yet, though history suggests patience pays off: both GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 arrived on PC well after their console debuts. Console players, meanwhile, can get ready right now. Top up your PlayStation Network or Xbox wallet with gift cards from TURGAME.com, pre-order GTA 6, and pre-load the game so it's ready to play the second the clock strikes launch day. The biggest launch in entertainment history? The softer tone of this final preview feels deliberate - a confident statement from a studio that knows the entire world is watching. With the first trailer having shattered YouTube records back in 2023
