London midday: FTSE pops higher as Ithaca gains on Jackdaw approval. London stocks had popped into the black by midday on Wednesday, helped along by gains for the likes of Ithaca Energy after the government approved the Jackdaw gas field in the North Sea, as a bigger-than-expected rise in inflation cemented rate hike expectations. The FTSE 100 was up 0.1% at 10,741.64, reversing earlier declines. Figures from the Office for National Statistics showed that inflation soared to the highest annual rate in almost a year last month as transport costs soared. The consumer price index rose by 3.5% in the 12 months to September, up from 3.1% in August. It was also slightly above forecasts for 3.4%. The largest upward contribution came from transport, particularly motor fuels, with prices in the segment jumping 6.6%, up from 4.6% a month earlier. The average price of petrol rose to 169.5p per litre, the highest since August 2022, while the cost of diesel was the steepest since July 2022. Core CPI, which strips out more volatile energy, food, alcohol and tobacco prices, rose by 2.8%, up from 2.5% in August. Grant Fitzner, chief economist at the ONS, said: "Other upward pressures included airfares and, to a lesser extent, computer games and live events, which are often volatile. "These were partially offset by the cost of hotel stays, where prices rose by less than this time last year." Martin Sartorius, lead economist at the Confederation of British Industry, said: "September's rise in inflation means that a rate hike will remain firmly on the table at the Monetary Policy Committee's next meeting. While there have been limited signs of higher energy costs feeding into domestic price pressures so far, the MPC will likely want to guard against the risk of persistently higher headline inflation becoming embedded in future wage and price-setting behaviour." Other data released by the ONS showed an 8.3% hike in producer input prices in the year to September, up from a revised 6.7% gain in August and well ahead of forecasts for a 7.6% jump. Factory gate prices spiked 4.6%, the highest since April 2023, against August's 3.8% rise. A surge in the price of crude oil was the largest contributory factor. There was also an update on public sector borrowing, which came in £24.5bn in September, up £1.8bn year-on-year, as government spending - including higher debt interest costs - increased by more than inflation. Borrowing in the financial year to September remained below the same period a year earlier, at £97.8bn, but ahead of the Office for Budget Responsibility's forecast. In equity markets, Ithaca Energy, BP and Shell gained after the UK government said it had approved plans to begin drilling in the Jackdaw gas field in the North Sea. Jackdaw is owned and operated by Adura, which is a joint venture between Shell and Equinor, Norway's state oil company. Neil Wilson, UK investor strategist at Saxo Markets, said Ithaca was likely being boosted by "hopes that the approval signals the government will also greenlight its Rosebank project". Recruiters Michael Page and Hays were the top performers on the FTSE 250 after well-received earnings from Randstad. On the downside, Aberdeen slid despite posting a rise in third-quarter assets under management and administration, reflecting positive markets and acquisitions. Precious metals miner Fresnillo lost its shine as it reported a drop in third-quarter silver and gold production but maintained its full-year guidance, while Hochschild also fell after a production report. Halfords backed its full-year profit expectations and hailed "strong" trading in the first half, but shares of the provider of motoring and cycling products and services slumped as indications of a weaker second half prompted investors to take some profits. Domino's Pizza fell as it maintained full-year expectations but reported a slowdown in like-for-like sales growth in Q3. 'An asset to the village': Green light for new Domino's Pizza branch in South Staffordshire. Published 21st Oct 2026, 14:44 BST Councillors welcomed the creation of 10 full-time jobs and 15 part-time positions. A new Domino's Pizza shop can open in a South Staffordshire village after a change of use request was given the thumbs up. South Staffordshire District Council's planning committee unanimously approved the change of use of a unit at Wombourne Enterprise Park at their meeting on Tuesday (October 20), welcoming the creation of new jobs for the area. Permission was granted last year to sub-divide a retail unit at the Bridgnorth Road site into two separate units: one unit of 804sqm for bulky goods retail and a second unit of 148sqm for food and drink retail or a gym. The latest application, seeking to change the use of the smaller unit to a hot food takeaway, came to the committee because South Staffordshire District Council was the applicant. A report to the planning committee said: "The application site is located on the west side of Wombourne. The site comprises a supermarket (Lidl), retail units (currently unoccupied) and industrial/commercial units to the rear of the site. "The planning agent has confirmed that the intended occupier is to be Domino's Pizza. The proposed opening hours are 11am to 11pm, seven days a week. "External alterations are also proposed to facilitate the development. These include the installation of new entrance doors on the front elevation, together with an air intake and extraction system, condenser units, and a fire exit door on the rear elevation. "Wombourne Parish Council has considered this application and, whilst members acknowledge that it is positive to see one of the long-vacant units at Wombourne Enterprise Park potentially being brought back into active use, they do have a number of concerns that they would ask the local planning authority to consider carefully before determining the application. "The parish council's principal concerns relate to the operational impacts of the proposed hot food takeaway: namely whether the available parking provision will be sufficient to accommodate staff, customers and delivery drivers, the additional vehicle movements generated by the development and the potential impact on the nearby junction, the potential for increased litter and cooking odours associated with a hot food takeaway [and] the proposed opening hours and whether evening activity within the car park could result in increased noise and disturbance for nearby residential properties." Committee member Councillor Philip Davis said on Tuesday: "I'm in favour of it. For a business like this it seems like utopia where it's situated - from the notes the nearest residents are situated 60 metres from the car park and the nearest house is 130 metres from the unit. "The big one for me is environmental health have no objections to it. It's going to create 10 full-time jobs and 15 part-time jobs, which is good for the village and good for local employment." Councillor Meg Barrow said: "I too am in favour of this. I know this area very well and it's right next to the Lidl supermarket which is very busy and very well-used. "It's an asset to the village."

Pune: FDA suspends Domino's Pizza outlet licence after cockroaches found During inspection. Pune, October 14, 2026: Over 25 outlets inspected in Pune; two other outlets face proposed adjudication proceedings for significant food safety violations. Under the dynamic leadership and visionary guidance of Tukaram Mundhe (IAS), Commissioner, Food and Drug Administration, Maharashtra State, widely recognised for his disciplined administration, transparency and unwavering commitment to public health, the FDA has intensified its statewide campaign against unsafe food, adulteration and unhygienic food business practices. D. W. Bhogawade Joint Commissioner (Food) Food and Drug Administration, Maharashtra State, Pune Division said, "In line with his vision of "Safe Food, Safe Maharashtra," the FDA, Pune Division, has undertaken a special inspection drive covering Domino's Pizza outlets across the division. As part of this drive, more than 25 Domino's Pizza outlets were inspected in Pune." During these inspections, serious food safety and hygiene violations were observed at M/s Jubilant FoodWorks Limited (Domino's Pizza), Warje, Pune, resulting in the immediate suspension of its food licence on 14 October 2026. Additionally, significant discrepancies were identified at two other outlets, against which adjudication proceedings for the imposition of penalties will be initiated. During the inspection conducted on 13 October 2026 by the Food Safety Officer live cockroaches and dead cockroach body parts were found in the kitchen and food storage areas. Other major deficiencies included inadequate segregation of vegetarian and non-vegetarian food handling equipment, incomplete food receiving temperature records, improper cleaning and sanitation, unhygienic storage conditions, an unpleasant odour from the washroom situated in the dining area, and non-availability of prescribed identification cards for food delivery personnel. Considering the gravity of these violations, subsequently suspended the food licence of the Warje outlet with immediate effect. The FDA, Pune Division, will continue its special inspection drives across restaurants, food chains and food delivery establishments to ensure that citizens receive safe and hygienic food.
Maharashtra FDA suspends licences of 3 Mumbai food outlets, including Domino's, over hygiene violations. Maharashtra FDA suspends licences or registrations of three Mumbai eateries after inspections reportedly uncover improper food storage, cockroach infestation and other hygiene violations. * October 14, 2026 The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has suspended the food business licence of a Domino's Pizza outlet in Parel and revoked the licence of Maaz Food Parcel and Catering in Bhandup West, Mumbai, following inspections that reportedly revealed serious food safety and hygiene violations. The action, announced on October 13, 2026, followed checks that found improper storage and handling of food, inadequate sanitation and other breaches of food safety requirements. At the Domino's outlet, operated by Jubilant FoodWorks Ltd, officials found vegetarian and non-vegetarian food stored together in the same deep freezer, while chicken and paneer were reportedly prepared on the same oven or grill. The establishment had previously received an improvement notice in August but allegedly failed to rectify the deficiencies. At the Bhandup catering unit, inspectors found cockroaches, clogged drains, unlabelled prepared food and other hygiene lapses. The FDA also raised concerns about the use of fat spread when the menu mentioned butter. The enforcement action is part of Maharashtra's broader efforts to improve food safety and hold food businesses accountable for maintaining hygienic conditions. The department's findings highlight the importance of ensuring that food served to customers meets prescribed safety standards, irrespective of a business's size or popularity. Food Safety violations. The Domino's Pizza outlet under scrutiny is located at Rangoli Time Complex on Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Road in Parel and is operated by Jubilant FoodWorks Ltd. According to reports citing the FDA, the establishment had been inspected on August 11, following which officials issued an improvement notice directing it to address identified deficiencies. However, a follow-up inspection on October 9 found that several requirements remained unmet. The most concerning findings involved the storage and preparation of vegetarian and non-vegetarian food. Officials found both categories stored together in a deep freezer, while chicken and paneer were being cooked on the same oven or grill. Such practices raise concerns about cross-contamination, particularly for customers who follow vegetarian diets or have specific dietary requirements. The FDA also noted that the outlet had failed to produce conformity reports for food-contact packaging materials and records relating to the maintenance of essential equipment. These documents help establish whether packaging and equipment meet applicable safety requirements and are maintained appropriately. Following the inspection, the outlet's licence was suspended on October 12. A separate inspection at Maaz Food Parcel and Catering, located on LBS Marg in Sonapur, Bhandup West, reportedly uncovered several additional violations. Inspectors found cockroaches in the kitchen, clogged and unclean drains, prepared food without labels and artificial food colouring in the kitchen. Officials also alleged that the establishment used fat spread while describing butter on its menu, potentially misleading customers about the product being served. Wider crackdown context. The latest action forms part of a wider enforcement drive by the Maharashtra FDA to check compliance with food safety requirements across restaurants, catering businesses and other food establishments. The action also included Mughal Dhaba in Kurla West, whose registration was suspended following a complaint about stale food in an order placed through the food delivery platform Zomato. According to reports, an inspection on October 8 found clogged drains containing food waste and stagnant dirty water. The FDA's action against the three Mumbai establishments demonstrates that inspections can be prompted by routine enforcement as well as consumer complaints. It also highlights the importance of maintaining hygiene standards throughout the food preparation process, rather than treating compliance as a formality. Under India's Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, food businesses are required to follow prescribed safety and hygiene requirements. Depending on the nature of the violations and the regulatory process, authorities can take action against establishments that fail to comply. An improvement notice is intended to give a food business an opportunity to correct identified deficiencies; continued non-compliance can lead to stronger enforcement measures. The latest developments also come after an earlier Maharashtra FDA drive against major food chains in August, when licences of four Domino's outlets and one Pizza Hut outlet were suspended over reported hygiene and food safety lapses. That action included concerns about pest control, cleanliness, food storage and monitoring practices. While the latest cases concern specific establishments, they raise broader questions about the consistency of food safety checks, the responsibility of operators to supervise their outlets and the effectiveness of corrective measures. The logical indian's perspective. Food safety is not merely a regulatory requirement; it is a matter of public health, consumer trust and basic responsibility. People who order a meal from a well-known restaurant or a neighbourhood catering service should be able to expect that the food has been stored, prepared and served under hygienic conditions. Businesses, in turn, have a responsibility to protect their customers through regular inspections, staff training, transparent menus, proper sanitation and prompt action whenever deficiencies are identified. The FDA's intervention is an important reminder that reputation and popularity cannot replace accountability. At the same time, enforcement should be consistent, transparent and focused on lasting improvements rather than temporary compliance following inspections.
