About the job

Requirements
  • Two to three years of experience building production backend or data systems, or equivalent depth owning production systems end to end, making design decisions, and handling incidents.
  • A degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Deep experience in at least one backend language; the team primarily uses Python.
  • Strong SQL and data modeling skills across relational and document databases; knowledge of indexes, query plans, transactions, isolation, safe schema changes, and consistency across multiple stores.
  • Experience building safely rerunnable and backfillable pipelines over structured and unstructured data, including JSON and PDFs, and understanding of analytics data modeling.
  • Experience running large language model or optical character recognition workloads in production, including output variability, structured-output validation, quality measurement, latency, and cost at scale.
  • Understanding of model deployment and serving, including capacity and quotas, version pinning and evaluation, rollbacks, and fallback when a model or region is unavailable.
  • Understanding of rate limiting, including client handling of HTTP 429 responses, service quotas and backpressure, and rate-limit errors for large language model deployments.
  • Understanding of distributed systems and service contracts, including versioned and backward-compatible APIs, events, and schemas; timeouts, idempotent retries, delivery guarantees, and handling permanently unsuccessful work.
  • Production experience with a major cloud provider (AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform) and running services on serverless and container platforms; understanding of networking, DNS, private connectivity, identity, permissions, and infrastructure changes deployed as code through CI/CD.
  • Understanding of OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, single sign-on, and multi-factor authentication, including token issuance, validation, and expiration, and current practices such as short-lived credentials and service-to-service authentication without shared secrets.
  • Ability to design role-based access control around least privilege, scope permissions to resources, and enforce access on the server.
  • Understanding of user and service account lifecycles, including provisioning, role changes, offboarding, and regular access reviews.
  • Ability to protect secrets and personal data and treat customer and company information as confidential.
  • Ability to produce clear design documents, pull request descriptions, and incident write-ups.
Responsibilities
  • Build batch and real-time pipelines that ingest data from documents, APIs, customer relationship management systems, and internal services.
  • Build document-processing systems using optical character recognition and artificial intelligence models that remain accurate, reliable, and affordable as volume grows.
  • Design data models across relational databases, document stores, and data lake storage, and safely evolve them with the product.
  • Provide artificial intelligence and machine learning teams with clean, structured, accessible datasets, including training data.
  • Build data quality checks and monitoring to catch bad data before it is relied upon.
  • Build and operate APIs and background services, and own their behavior when dependencies are slow, failing, or rate-limited.
  • Maintain customer relationship management and other third-party integrations, and fix them when they break.
  • Help build real-time sales tools, such as lead routing and live caller lookup, where speed and correctness both matter.
  • Contribute to secure, controlled data exports to external partners.
  • Maintain older services and migrate them to the primary cloud where appropriate.
  • Support internal web tools used by case and sales staff.
  • Write design documents for assigned work and contribute to architecture decisions.
  • Work in the infrastructure-as-code and CI/CD setup, modifying it as needed for assigned work.
  • Protect sensitive personal and financial data in code, logs, configuration, and third-party integrations.
  • Mentor junior engineers and help improve standards for code quality, CI, and releases, including guardrails for AI coding agents.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with the existing stack: Python, Azure, React, TypeScript, and Google Cloud, where some older services still run.
  • Experience with orchestration and data platform tools such as Dagster, Airflow, or Databricks.
  • Experience with streaming systems such as Kafka.
  • Experience with retrieval and vector search.
  • Experience with distributed rate limiting or API gateway design.
  • Experience with customer relationship management or third-party integrations involving fragile authentication.
  • Experience in regulated or personally identifiable information-heavy domains such as tax or finance.
  • Experience using AI coding agents in production work.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • Skill progression: Tax preparers receive structured training in corporate and partnership returns, extending their expertise beyond individual preparation.
  • Lead support: The sales closer role receives warm, qualified prospects, reducing the need to source every opportunity independently.
  • Defined hours: Weekend closers work seven-to-four shifts with two consecutive days off, making their weekly schedule explicit.

What critics are saying

  • Outcome limits: Neither a settlement percentage nor completion date is guaranteed, leaving results dependent on individual case circumstances.
  • Variable earnings: The closer role pairs a $16.90 hourly wage with production-based commissions that are expressly not guaranteed.
  • On-site constraint: Junior advocates must attend the office for every scheduled shift, with no remote-work option.

What makes Tax Relief Advocates unique

  • Consultation pricing: The initial tax-debt consultation is free, separating an introductory assessment from later investigation and resolution work.
  • Case coverage: Junior advocates back up case owners on urgent matters and reconnect with clients who stop responding.
  • Preparation depth: Tax preparers handle amended, multistate, rental and self-employment returns alongside standard individual filings.
