Twist Bioscience at 26.6 times sales: Can AI-driven drug discovery justify the valuation?

Twist Bioscience shares have surged 566% over the past year, far outpacing the S&P 500's 17% gain. The DNA synthesis company now trades at 26.6 times sales, compared with 3.1 times for the broader market. The company sells made-to-order DNA to drug makers and research labs. Revenue grew 22% annually over the past three years, but operating losses equalled 32% of sales in the latest period. Management attributes recent growth to drug developers using AI. Revenue from drug developers jumped 49% year-over-year to $40.4 million in fiscal Q3 2026. The company raised its fiscal 2026 revenue forecast to $456 million to $457 million. Management expects adjusted EBITDA to reach break-even in fiscal Q4 2026. However, in fiscal Q3, adjusted EBITDA showed a loss of $11.3 million. The next test comes in November when management issues fiscal 2027 guidance.

TWST jumps as Twist Bioscience lands Lilly AI drug discovery deal.

TWST jumps as Twist Bioscience lands Lilly AI drug discovery deal. MATT MONACO - UPDATED SEP. 19, 2026, 11:07 AM ET Twist Bioscience Corporation stocks have been trading up by 7.1 percent following highly positive sentiment around its latest developments. What traders need to know. * Twist Bioscience signed an agreement to provide antibody characterization data and services to Eli Lilly's AI/ML drug discovery platform, TuneLab, integrating its wet-lab protocols into Lilly's AI models. * Shares of TWST rose, in some reports by more than 4%, after the Lilly TuneLab antibody characterization data services agreement was announced. * Leerink raised its price target on Twist Bioscience from $120 to $160 and reiterated an Outperform rating, leaning on a large, early-stage AI drug discovery opportunity. * UBS initiated coverage of TWST with a Neutral rating and a $144 price target within a broader life science tools initiation that sees the sector outgrowing global GDP over time. * The company said its pilot work on AI-designed mini-binder proteins for Anthropic is already "probably sort of" embedded in its fiscal 2027 orders outlook, not incremental to current guidance. Weekly Update Sep 14 - Sep 18, 2026: On Saturday, September 19, 2026 Twist Bioscience Corporation stock [NASDAQ: TWST] is trending up by 7.1%! Discover the key drivers behind this movement as well as its expert analysis in the detailed breakdown below. Healthcare industry expert: Analyst sentiment - positive Twist Bioscience occupies a differentiated position in synthetic DNA and antibody discovery, with strong 52% gross margins and nearly 10% three-year revenue CAGR off a $377M base, but remains structurally loss-making (EBIT margin ~-32%, ROE ~-30%). Cash burn is material: Q3 free cash flow was -$8.6M despite positive $1.1M operating cash flow largely driven by $18M stock-based comp. Balance sheet risk is contained near term, with current ratio 2.7 and modest leverage (total debt/equity 0.21). The stock is in a powerful short-term uptrend: from $133.41 close on 9/14 to $166.60 on 9/18, with successive higher highs and no material intraday reversals, indicating aggressive buying following the news flow. The 9/17-9/18 range ($155-167) is the new control zone; $155 emerges as first meaningful support and a clear risk-management line. For active traders, pullbacks toward $155 with stabilizing intraday volume offer high-reward entries, targeting a retest and extension above $170. Lilly TuneLab and Anthropic mini-binder work firmly position Twist at the intersection of synthetic biology and AI drug discovery, a structural growth vector well ahead of the broader Healthcare and Diagnostics & Screening groups. The Leerink PT hike to $160 and UBS's $144 initiation validate institutional demand for the AI narrative despite ongoing losses. I see the risk-reward skewed favorably: accumulate on dips toward $155 support, with a 6-12 month upside target zone of $185-$200 and technical resistance beginning near $175. Quick financial overview. Twist Bioscience Corporation is trading in a strong upswing, with the weekly chart showing a move from $133.41 to $166.60 over the recent data window. That is a sharp multi-day leg higher, reinforced by intraday action where price ran from an open near $158 to a session high above $167 before closing just under that high. For short-term traders, that is classic momentum behavior: buyers in control, shallow intraday pullbacks, and a close near the top of the day's range. The Lilly TuneLab agreement is driving this surge, as TWST locks its antibody characterization workflows directly into Eli Lilly's AI/ML drug discovery platform. Multiple reports tie the share price pop, including gains of more than 4% on one session, to this AI collaboration. On the Street side, Leerink lifting its price target from $120 to $160 with an Outperform call, and UBS coming in at $144 with a Neutral, both anchor expectations well above prior averages and help explain why traders are willing to chase strength. Under the hood, Twist Bioscience generated about $376.57M in revenue over the trailing period, with a healthy 52% gross margin but deep negative profitability metrics, including an EBIT margin near -31.8% and returns on equity around -29%. The latest quarterly report (period ending 2026/06/30) shows $118.38M in revenue but a net loss of roughly $35.05M and EBITDA of about -$27.96M, although operating cash flow turned slightly positive at $1.12M. Balance sheet strength is reasonable for a high-growth name, with a current ratio of 2.7 and total debt to equity at 0.21, but valuation is rich, with price-to-sales around 23.89 and price-to-book over 23, which helps explain why some analysts stay cautious even as they set high absolute targets. Lilly TuneLab, Twist Bioscience partner on antibody drug discovery.

Lilly TuneLab, Twist Bioscience partner on antibody drug discovery. Twist will provide antibody characterization data services for TuneLab, allowing users to generate high-quality wet lab data. September 16, 2026 Content Marketing Editor Editor's Take: Linking experimental data to AI-enabled discovery can potentially result in acceleration of antibody drug discovery. Lilly TuneLab, an artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML) drug discovery platform from Eli Lilly and Company, is partnering with Twist Bioscience. Twist is a mid-cap growth and value biotech company. How Twist interfaces with TuneLab. The agreement centers on Twist providing antibody characterization data services for TuneLab - including for AbLab, an antibody developability prediction model. In short, users can order antibody services from Twist using TuneLab preferred Twist protocols, to generate high-quality wet lab data. TuneLab's prediction models help participants more rapidly down-select candidate molecules. Overall, the approach links experimental data to AI-enabled discovery - allowing for potential acceleration of antibody drug discovery. Twist Co-Founder and CEO Emily Leproust, PhD, says Twist's scale and high-throughput capabilities generate consistent, reliable antibody characterization data. This caliber of data, Leproust explains, is what AI models should be trained on. "The quality of an AI model's output depends on the quality of the data used to train it," Leproust said. "Lilly's leadership in empowering AI-enabled drug discovery and its impressive network of partnerships create a powerful ecosystem... TuneLab users can select preferred protocols to generate high-quality data with preferred pricing. [This helps] them to more efficiently select antibody sequences against their targets and contribute that data back to TuneLab." Other unique Lilly services. TuneLab, part of Lilly's Catalyze360 suite with Lilly Ventures, Lilly Gateway Labs, and Lilly ExploR&D, exists to accelerate biotech innovation. Participating companies can access AI/ML drug discovery models trained on decades of proprietary Lilly research data. Twist Bioscience raises $300M at $96/share after hiking 2026 revenue guidance to $457M

Twist Bioscience raised $300 million through a follow-on stock offering at $96 per share in early August 2026. The synthetic biology company simultaneously increased its fiscal 2026 revenue guidance to $456–457 million and reported third-quarter sales of $118.38 million, though it posted a net loss of $35.05 million. The firm is also working to resolve legacy securities litigation through a proposed $17.05 million class-action settlement. Fourth-quarter revenue guidance stands at $123–124 million. Despite the upgraded outlook, analysts remain cautious about Twist's path to profitability. Some project continued losses alongside approximately 15% annual revenue growth. The company's share price rose 26.3% following the announcements, though concerns about ongoing dilution and losses persist.
