Requirements
  • High school graduation or equivalent is required.
  • Must be a graduate from a program accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) in the specialty field or subject area in which they teach.
Responsibilities
  • Coordinate, facilitate, and supervise externship training, including students' transition from classwork to externship and graduation in preparation for placements.
  • Locate, maintain, and acquire externship sites and contracts; schedule and supervise students' externship assignments; advise students; and provide classroom instruction in accordance with program objectives.
  • Assist students in gaining meaningful employment in jobs applicable to their field of study, including teaching job-search workshops and critiquing resumes.
  • Provide customer service to current and graduating students in accordance with the college's mission and purpose.
  • Coordinate and assist graduates with job interviews and obtaining entry-level healthcare career opportunities.
  • Establish, acquire, and maintain contracts with externship sites using the approved college agreement; maintain accurate site information, including contacts and contract termination and expiration dates; and initiate renewals in a timely manner.
  • Maintain ongoing contact with local employers to obtain information on externship opportunities; research and develop new sites and employers; build working relationships; facilitate student employment opportunities; and maintain positive long-term employer relationships.
  • Work with externship staff to clarify facility-specific policies and procedures.
  • Place a predetermined number of students per week into externship opportunities with local employers.
  • Achieve established program extern-to-placement conversion percentage goals.
  • Maintain department policies and procedures and attend in-services and other required meetings.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student, associate, and college information as required.
  • Advise students about externship site choices and assign students to sites as appropriate.
  • Monitor sites through phone or on-site visits, mediate conflicts, establish learning objectives, and determine and record attendance concerns.
  • Track externship attendance and ensure that externship assignments are completed as determined by the program.
  • Coordinate a plan to observe, instruct, and evaluate students' learning and practical skills, including direct observation assessment in an applicable setting for the related instructional area.
  • Inform externship staff of student objectives in each program area.
  • Validate with externship staff the effectiveness of student placement and progress toward mutually established objectives, ensuring an adequate experience and satisfactory student performance.
