Requirements
  • A Bachelor of Science in Nursing or an NP or PA license is required.
  • A current New York State license is required.
  • CCDS certification is required.
  • Proficiency in computer use with Microsoft Windows and Office applications, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, is required.
  • Five years of clinical experience in an acute hospital setting and at least two years of inpatient CDI experience are required.
  • Proficiency in ICD-10-CM and PCS Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting is required.
  • Ability to multitask and demonstrate communication and critical-thinking skills is required.
Responsibilities
  • Conduct timely DRG appeals supporting the CHS DRG Appeals Shared Service.
  • Analyze denials and appeals cases as appropriate.
  • Determine coding accuracy by reviewing medical documentation and applying coding guidelines.
  • Clinically validate diagnoses in question.
  • Manage the complete appeals process through all levels of appeal according to payer contract.
  • Initiate and follow through on all RAC and third-party payer denials at every level, and review all denials with the direct report to plan appeal strategy.
  • Meet or exceed appeal deadline completion times.
  • Involve appropriate physicians in the appeal process, including preparation for ALJ and DRA.
  • Follow up on third-party payer responses to appeals as appropriate, and update RAC and third-party payer focus studies and the Epic revenue cycle.
  • Communicate denial issues with site HIM/CDIP departments and patient accounts.
  • Continuously evaluate clinical documentation quality to identify incomplete or inconsistent documentation and clinically validate inpatient diagnoses affecting code selection, resulting DRG, and payment.
  • Apply working knowledge of AHA Coding Clinics.
  • Use an encoder and correct coding and re-drop bills.
  • Communicate with physician advisors or attending physicians verbally or in writing to validate diagnoses in question and support appeals.
  • Provide feedback to HIM management staff and CDI leadership about documentation improvement opportunities, and participate in planning and developing educational programs to improve documentation.
  • Participate in education programs to maintain up-to-date coding skills.
