Requirements
  • A high school diploma or GED equivalent is required.
  • Must be certified in accordance with American Welding Society specifications and Stennis Space Center standards, or pass a performance test to qualify for certification under Stennis Space Center standards.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen to obtain the required NASA badge.
  • Must provide a certified birth certificate with state seal, passport, or Immigration and Naturalization Service citizenship documents on the date of hire.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Must lift a minimum 30-pound load from the ground frequently.
  • Must walk six hours per day.
  • Must bend and stoop six hours per day.
  • Must work overhead with a minimum 20-pound load.
  • Must push and pull frequently throughout the day.
  • Must frequently walk up and down stairs.
  • Must stand seven hours per day.
  • Must climb ladders and scaffolding.
  • Must wear personal protective equipment, including steel-toe shoes, safety glasses, hard hat, and gloves, continuously for six hours.
  • Must tolerate extreme cold or heat continuously for three hours.
Responsibilities
  • Work from blueprints, sketches, and verbal instructions.
  • Assemble and weld iron, steel, aluminum, stainless steel, and other alloys.
  • Perform arc and tungsten inert gas welding; use an oxygen-acetylene torch and cutting or notching equipment, including a band saw, ironworker, shear, and reciprocating saw, to cut and fit assemblies.
  • Determine fabrication, repair, or modification requirements and methods; lay out and plan assigned work.
  • Construct stands and jigs for weldments.
  • Troubleshoot and adjust welding and burning equipment.
  • Assemble and connect welding apparatus, including tanks, regulators, hoses, torches and tips, cables, feeders, and electrode holders.
  • Perform other work within related craft skills.
  • Assist with or complete work in other craft areas when requested.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
