Cushway to lead Chaucer's UK P&C team.

Cushway to lead Chaucer's UK P&C team. Global specialty re/insurance group Chaucer has expanded its UK capabilities with the appointment of Ryan Cushway as Head of UK Property & Casualty, effective immediately. In his new position, Cushway will work to help broaden Chaucer's UK P&C offering and enhance its ability to deliver specialist solutions across the country, supporting Chaucer's ambition to build a leading UK P&C proposition. An experienced executive with deep underwriting expertise, extensive market knowledge and well-established broker relationships, Cushway is joining Chaucer from Sompo, where he served as Head of International & UK Casualty. Prior to this, he held several senior positions at Aspen in similar classes of business, with earlier experience at Liberty Specialty Markets. Paul Restarick, Head of Non-Marine Insurance at Chaucer, said: "Advertisement Shout is delighted to welcome Ryan to Chaucer. He brings a wealth of experience, a strong track record of underwriting performance and deep broker relationships that will further strengthen its position in the UK market. "This appointment represents a significant investment in our Property & Casualty capabilities and demonstrates our commitment to building a market-leading proposition for brokers and clients. The combination of Ryan's leadership, expertise, and the scale of capacity we are deploying creates an exciting platform for future growth." Cushway added: "I am thrilled to be joining Chaucer at such an exciting stage in its development. Chaucer has built a strong reputation for underwriting excellence, long-term partnerships and empowering talented teams to succeed. "We look forward to establishing a leading UK Property & Casualty offering, delivering outstanding service to brokers and clients, and building a business that can grow sustainably over the years ahead." Insurance moves: Chaucer, Berkshire Hathaway, Simply Business and Gallagher.

Insurance moves: Chaucer, Berkshire Hathaway, Simply Business and Gallagher. Chaucer names a new head of UK property and casualty, Berkshire Hathaway Specialty expands into Poland, while Simply Business and Gallagher also make moves 20 Oct 2026 This week's appointments span marine war risks, UK property and casualty underwriting, small business distribution, and a specialty insurer's expansion into Central and Eastern Europe. Chaucer appoints Ryan Cushway as head of UK property and casualty. Chaucer has appointed Ryan Cushway (pictured, left) as head of UK property and casualty, effective immediately, as it builds out a UK P&C proposition. Cushway joins from Sompo, where he was head of international and UK casualty. He previously held senior roles at Aspen in similar classes, and worked earlier at Liberty Specialty Markets. Paul Restarick, head of non-marine insurance at Chaucer, described the appointment as a significant investment in its property and casualty capabilities, and pointed to the scale of capacity Chaucer is deploying. A new UK P&C build from a well-capitalised specialty group adds capacity for brokers. In a soft commercial market, though, a new entrant is likely to compete hard on price and terms, and brokers should watch how Chaucer's appetite develops. Berkshire Hathaway names Carsten Keune country manager for Poland. Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance (BHSI) has entered the Polish market and appointed Carsten Keune (pictured, right) as country manager for Poland. He will lead BHSI's business in Poland and Central and Eastern Europe. Andreas Krause, head of DACH at BHSI, said Keune was well placed to establish the insurer's presence in Poland. Across the region, BHSI offers property, casualty, construction, energy, executive and professional lines, marine and multinational cover. For London brokers placing multinational programmes with Polish or Central and Eastern European exposures, BHSI's local presence adds another capacity option for fronting and local policies. Simply Business makes two appointments. Digital broker Simply Business has appointed Kulchetan Sanga as UK chief commercial officer and Mark Potter as managing director of its in-house managing general agent (MGA). Sanga will lead the commercial function, covering partnerships, product strategy and customer propositions. He has held senior roles at price comparison sites and media organisations, and has experience scaling consumer finance platforms. Potter has more than 20 years in insurance, scaling MGA and underwriting businesses and securing insurer and reinsurance capacity. UK chief executive Julie Fisher said the in-house MGA had long been a key driver of profitable growth and innovation. Simply Business reached one million UK customers earlier this year and has grown its customer base by more than 50% since 2020. Simply Business is a major competitor for small business and landlord customers. Strengthening its MGA and hiring a commercial chief with comparison site experience signals a push to grow both distribution and underwriting margin, adding pressure on brokers in the micro-SME segment. Gallagher names Darren Rowland executive director of hull and war risks. Gallagher has appointed Darren Rowland as executive director of hull and war risks in its global marine practice, based in London. He reports to Andrew James, managing director of marine. Rowland has more than 40 years of marine broking experience. He joins from specialist Lloyd's marine and energy broker ATL, where he was lead marine broker for seven years. Before that, he spent more than 20 years at Willis in senior marine broking roles in London and Hong Kong. James said hull and war cover was vital for the marine industry given current geopolitical uncertainty. "I have strong relationships with key stakeholders throughout the sector, including ship owners, charterers and global insurance markets, which puts us in a great position," said Rowland. War risk has become one of the most volatile parts of the marine market, with conflict driving rapid changes to listed areas, additional premiums and cover availability, as Insurance Business has reported in its coverage of the hidden insurance crisis from the Iran war. A veteran hull and war broker strengthens Gallagher in a class where relationships with underwriters matter more than ever.

Chaucer and Indemni new US Cargo proposition to target strategic theft.

Chaucer and Indemni new US Cargo proposition to target strategic theft. Global specialty reinsurance and insurance group Chaucer has partnered with Indemni, a technology-led cargo risk specialist and newly approved Lloyd's coverholder, to launch a specialist US cargo insurance proposition designed to target strategic theft. The new offering will provide cover for US land transit risks across single-trip transit, annual contingent cargo and standalone strategic theft. It integrates specialised coverage with technology-focused risk mitigations, such as driver verification, shipment tracking and enhanced visibility across the logistics chain. The program is led by Chaucer, with Indemni underwriting on its behalf alongside additional capacity from supporting Lloyd's syndicates. "Strategic theft requires a different underwriting approach because the controls surrounding a shipment can materially change the quality of the risk, particularly as theft methods continue to evolve. Indemni's risk management technology enhances driver verification, tracking and visibility throughout the logistics chain providing critical insights and controls that are central to how we assess exposure," Winnie Hartigan, Deputy Underwriter, Marine Specialty, Chaucer, explained. Adding: "By incorporating those controls into the proposition itself, we can take a more informed approach to risk selection while providing insurance protection designed around the way these losses actually occur, and create a stronger framework for preventing, identifying and responding to the strategic theft threat." This product rollout marks a key milestone in their ongoing collaboration, building upon Chaucer's earlier support of Indemni's successful Lloyd's coverholder application. Indemni's technology is designed to support risk management throughout the shipment lifecycle, with verification and tracking controls forming an important part of the underwriting approach to strategic theft. Simon Schnorr, Head of Marine & Energy, Chaucer, said: "Cargo theft is an established marine risk, but the methods being used are becoming increasingly sophisticated and evolving beyond traditional physical theft; with criminals increasingly using fraud, impersonation and manipulation of legitimate freight processes to gain control of shipments. "As those exposures evolve, the insurance market needs to adapt with relevant solutions. Indemni brings a focused approach to a growing challenge for cargo owners and the logistics sector, combining specialist insurance protection with strong risk management. We are pleased to lead the programme and support its launch into the market." Zach En' Wezoh, CEO of Indemni, commented: "We are setting the new standard for freight insurance by linking over-the-road intelligence directly to underwriting. By rewarding verified operational controls with better coverage and pricing, Indemni is building the world's first insurance platform designed to eliminate physical supply chain risks."
