Requirements
  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university, including courses in biological science, chemistry, and mathematics, and successful completion of a National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science-accredited Medical Laboratory Science program, or a Bachelor of Science/Bachelor of Arts program in related science that meets certification requirements.
  • Medical Technologist/Medical Laboratory Scientist certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology or the American Medical Technologists, or American Society for Clinical Pathology categorical certification and a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree in related science.
  • An associate degree from an accredited college or university in Medical Laboratory Science or a related science, including 60 semester hours of academic credit with 6 semester hours of chemistry and 6 semester hours of biology, or graduation from a military medical laboratory specialist program.
  • Medical Laboratory Technician certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology or the American Medical Technologists is required.
  • Students who will complete a National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science-accredited program within 6 months and be eligible for the national board examination may be considered.
Responsibilities
  • Perform accurate testing and recognize abnormal or unusual results.
  • Report timely and accurate results in writing, verbally, by fax, or by computer.
  • Notify appropriate persons as necessary.
  • Perform and record instrument checks and quality control.
  • Perform routine equipment maintenance and calibration.
  • Identify quality control issues and initiate proper corrective action.
  • Follow instructions for analyzer operation and reagent preparation.
  • Document and notify laboratory leadership appropriately.
  • Demonstrate current knowledge of computer functions and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Actively engage in laboratory communications and staff meetings.
  • Prepare samples for testing, including proper labeling, specimen preservation and transport, and safe handling techniques.
  • Handle and report proficiency samples appropriately.
  • Notify appropriate caregivers by telephone of critical and corrected results and document notification according to policy.
  • Organize and prioritize work assignments to complete them in a timely manner.
  • Multitask to complete assigned work.
  • Teach procedures for which the employee is deemed competent and evaluate trainees using established forms or examinations.
  • Apply knowledge of disease processes to testing and test results.
  • Perform accuracy, precision, and correlation studies for new or existing assays.
  • Provide assistance with work schedules, student and staff training, supply inventory, purchasing, performance improvement, and the compliance plan.
  • Maintain required and annual competency before deadlines to perform laboratory testing.
  • Perform other assigned duties.
Desired Qualifications
  • Previous clinical microbiology experience is preferred.
