About the Job

Responsibilities

  • Design mechanical test fixtures in 3D computer-aided design to validate hardware going into real customers' homes.
  • Specify and validate components to meet test specifications provided by Electrical, Firmware, and Manufacturing Engineer teams.
  • Prototype quickly using in-house 3D printers, laser cutters, and machine shop; sketch concepts in the morning, print by lunch, and test on a bench by the end of the day.
  • Bring fixtures to life on the shop floor: verify test-points, debug mechanical issues, and collaborate with technicians.
  • Collaborate with external fabrication vendors to take designs from CAD to production-ready drawings, quotes, and first-article inspections.
  • Write documentation clear enough for the team to replicate the work and keep it running for years.

Desired Qualifications

  • Rising senior in a Bachelor of Science program, recent graduate (within the last year), or student in the final year of a Master of Science program in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Proficiency with at least one 3D computer-aided design package (e.g., SolidWorks, Fusion 360, Onshape, or equivalent).
  • Hands-on prototyping experience: 3D printing (FDM/SLA), laser cutting, basic machining, or general fabrication in a maker space, lab, or formula-style student project.
  • Working understanding of tolerance stack-ups, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing basics, and fasteners/joining methods.
  • Comfort reading mechanical drawings, electrical schematics, and bills of materials.
  • Basic electrical/electronics fluency: comfortable with a multimeter, digital multimeter, oscilloscope, bench power supply, and simple wiring.
  • Familiarity with pneumatic actuation, cam mechanisms, or other mechanical actuation for fixtures.
  • Some scripting ability for simple automation, data processing, or tool integration.
  • Awareness of Design for Manufacturing, Assembly, and Test principles.
  • Thoughtful use of artificial intelligence assistants and coding tools in engineering workflow—including good judgment about when outputs require verification and awareness of confidentiality practices.

About the Company

Lunar Energy

Modular energy storage system for homes

What Lunar Energy does: It sells a modular residential energy storage system called the Lunar System that stores energy from solar panels for use during peak hours or outages, helping homeowners maintain power and save on bills. How the product works: The system is built from expandable storage modules that can be added over time, charges from solar energy, and is paired with an app that shows energy usage, storage levels, and analytics while integrating with home solar setups. How it differs from competitors: It emphasizes scalable expandability, easy solar integration, and partnerships with solar installers who offer the Lunar System as part of their service, combining hardware with software for monitoring. The company’s goal: Enable environmentally conscious homeowners to achieve energy independence, lower energy costs, and stay powered during outages.
