About the Job

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Strong experience in mechanical product design, development, or manufacturing, including hands-on design experience and confidence working with computer-aided design (CAD).
  • Experience with mechanical components and manufacturing processes such as machining/CNC, sheet metal, and mechanical assemblies.
  • Experience with Value Analysis / Value Engineering (VA/VE or VAVE) and DFM/DFA/DFx methodologies.
  • Good understanding of should-cost principles and manufacturing cost drivers; hands-on expertise with specific costing tools is not required.
  • Experience working directly with suppliers or manufacturing partners and building strong technical relationships.
  • Evidence of delivering cost, manufacturability, or product-value improvements through engineering decisions.
  • Strong problem-solving, communication, and stakeholder-influencing skills, with the ability to work independently in an international environment.
  • Professional working proficiency in English and willingness to travel approximately 20% globally for supplier/customer visits, workshops, and project activities.

Responsibilities

  • Identify and develop cost-reduction and Value Engineering opportunities across existing products.
  • Analyze mechanical designs, manufacturing processes, and cost drivers to understand what components should cost and where engineering can create additional value.
  • Redesign mechanical components and assemblies using CAD and DFM/DFA/DFx principles to improve manufacturability, cost, and product value.
  • Work across machined parts, sheet metal, and mechanical assemblies, connecting design decisions with manufacturing processes and their cost implications.
  • Apply a should-cost mindset, considering materials, manufacturing processes, labor, tooling, and other cost drivers when evaluating designs and supplier solutions.
  • Build and maintain strong technical relationships with suppliers, collaborating with their engineering and manufacturing teams to identify and implement improvements.
  • Visit suppliers and lead or participate in technical and Value Engineering workshops to explore alternative designs, materials, and manufacturing approaches.
  • Lead opportunities through discovery and feasibility and support projects through implementation.
  • Partner closely with R&D and Category Management, presenting recommendations and influencing stakeholders without direct authority.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with SolidWorks is welcome, but strong experience with another advanced CAD platform is equally relevant.
  • Hands-on should-cost modelling or experience with dedicated costing tools.
  • Design-to-Cost or product cost optimization experience.
  • Supplier development or supplier cost-reduction experience.
  • Product qualification or validation experience.
  • Experience within a regulated product environment.
  • Medical-device or scientific-instrumentation experience.

About the Company

Thermo Fisher Scientific

Makes lab instruments, reagents and supplies

Thermo Fisher Scientific makes and sells the instruments, chemicals, consumables and lab services that drug companies, hospitals, universities and industrial labs use for research, testing and production. Its products cover work from gene sequencing and protein analysis to diagnostic tests and lab freezers, and its distribution arm ships supplies to labs worldwide. Drug developers also hire it to run clinical trials and to manufacture medicines under contract. It earns money from consumables that labs buy again and again, along with instrument sales, service contracts and outsourcing fees. The company traces its roots to Thermo Electron, founded in 1956, which merged with Fisher Scientific in 2006, and it is based in Waltham, Massachusetts.
