Captrust acquires Long Island firms, adds $1.2B assets. Captrust Financial Advisors, a registered investment advisor based in Raleigh, North Carolina, with $1.3 trillion in assets under advisement, has completed the acquisition of two Long Island firms: Compass Advisors and Long Island Wealth Management. The combined transaction brings $1.2 billion in client assets and seven professionals under Captrust's umbrella. Acquisition details. Compass Advisors, established in 2013 by Michael Cuneo and Lauren King, focuses on both institutional and wealth markets, managing approximately $300 million in retirement plan advisory assets. Long Island Wealth Management, founded in 2006 by Jeff Myers, specializes in serving high-net-worth and ultra-high-net-worth clients through financial planning services. The two firms collaborated since 2018, with Myers serving as Compass's chief investment officer and providing financial planning expertise, while Compass supported Myers with retirement plan services for business owners. The firms will merge upon integration into Captrust. King emphasized that partnering with Captrust allows them to focus on their core strength: client service. "We knew that the best way to really move forward in a very quickly changing world was to tap into a company who already had solved for many of these issues," King said. "In turn, we were able to focus on what Mike, Jeff and I do best, which is really servicing our clients and providing best-in-class service." Due diligence and partnership rationale. Myers and his team evaluated around a dozen potential partners before selecting Captrust. They were drawn to the firm's founder-led culture and robust client resources. Employee ownership was a key factor, with 68% of Captrust employees, or approximately 1,300 individuals, holding shares. This structure aligns with the collaborative ethos that has defined the long-standing partnership between the three founders. Mike Wunderli, managing director and head of mergers and acquisitions at Captrust, noted that the acquisition enhances the firm's presence in New York. The new hires will join Captrust's existing team in Lake Success, increasing the total headcount to 25 employees, including 14 advisors. Their expertise in serving business owners, high-net-worth families, and retirement advisory complements Captrust's existing services. Captrust's M&A activity. Wunderli highlighted that the acquisition reflects Captrust's approach to mergers, which prioritizes people and culture. "When we think about M&A at Captrust, it starts and ends with the people," Wunderli said. "And we ask the same questions: Are they strong leaders? Are they culture carriers? Do they have followership from their team? Are they multipliers, and do they lift each other up? And then, especially, do they put their clients and colleagues first? Are they entrepreneurial, and do they love what they do? Mike, Lauren and Jeff personify every one of these traits." Captrust has announced six deals so far this year, including Meritage Portfolio Management ($2.4 billion in assets), Stillwater Capital Advisors ($1.25 billion), Alpha Cubed Investments ($3.8 billion), Suncoast Prosperity ($830 million), the Compass/Long Island Wealth Management acquisition ($1.2 billion), and a Tampa Bay-based team from Truist Bank with about $1.2 billion in assets.

CNBC then sends an extensive email survey to all those firms that meet the initial criteria to gather more details about their practice. AccuPoint Solutions then applies CNBC's proprietary weighted criteria to refine the list and rank the firms. CNBC's proprietary weighted criteria includes but is not limited to things such as the advisory firm's regulatory/compliance record, number of years in the business, number of certified financial planners and total assets under management.
