  • Use established blood-draw techniques, identify and prepare sites, select veins and appropriate needles, provide post-venipuncture care, determine when skin puncture is appropriate, use the correct device, and follow minimum testing-volume requirements.
  • Contact the ordering physician or nurse when the required specimen amount cannot be obtained to establish test priority based on the quantity collected.

  • Greet patients, introduce oneself, explain the expected duration and nature of tests or procedures, thank patients, and ask whether further assistance is needed.
  • Validate inpatient and outpatient orders in the hospital APeX/Beaker system before collecting specimens; verify inpatient orders with the nurse, confirm whether collection is assigned to the lab or nurse, identify patients and scan wristbands to generate labels, use nurse-provided APeX requisitions and labels when needed, and enter paper outpatient requisitions according to protocol.
  • Process inpatient orders in the required priority order of STAT, timed, then routine; place outpatient specimens in routine blood racks within 30 minutes and process STAT specimens, urine, and body fluids within 20 minutes according to established priorities.
  • Escalate problems that take more than one to two minutes to resolve or set them aside until remaining work is processed; resolve problems within two hours and clear them by the end of the shift; check computer entries before verifying input.

  • Check the contents of the pneumatic tube from the Hematology clinic upon arrival in the ACC laboratory and promptly return the tube with slides, blood products, and supplies; send blood products to the clinic within five minutes of messenger delivery from the Blood Bank.
  • During computer downtime, process specimens according to downtime protocols without computer-generated labels, forward them to the proper testing sections, write patient and test information on pour-off tubes, follow downtime plans with minimal supervision, and handwrite requisitions and labels legibly.
