Requirements
  • A baccalaureate degree with formal training from a CAHEA-accredited school of Cytotechnology is required.
  • A New York State Department of Education Cytotechnologist license is required.
  • Certification in Cytotechnology by an HHS-approved certifying agency, such as ASCP, is required.
  • ThinPrep certification is required.
  • Knowledge of cytology and technical laboratory procedures is required.
  • Computer literacy is required.
Responsibilities
  • Perform Rapid On-Site Evaluations of fine needle aspiration specimens according to departmental protocol to determine specimen adequacy independently or in collaboration with a pathologist.
  • Microscopically examine slide preparations for cytologic evaluation, correlate clinical information with morphologic findings, make final diagnoses on negative gynecologic slides, and render microscopic evaluations on abnormal gynecologic and all non-gynecologic specimens pending pathologist diagnosis.
  • Thoroughly and systematically examine slides and evaluate specimen adequacy for diagnostic purposes, considering the quantity, quality, and preservation of cellular material; evaluate cytopathologic observations in relation to specimen source and advise the supervisor or pathologist of non-conformities.
  • Troubleshoot test anomalies and system problems to ensure accurate testing.
  • Respond promptly to supply and equipment issues, maintain stocked supplies, and communicate supply needs.
  • Follow the laboratory’s pre-analytic and analytic procedures.
  • Adhere to New York State Department of Health workload limits and maintain workload records.
  • Follow department quality-control policies and document quality-control activities, instrument work, and maintenance performed.
  • Establish and implement service priorities and workflow patterns, and monitor workflow to ensure prompt and efficient service delivery.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience performing Rapid On-Site Evaluation procedures is preferred.
  • One to two years of Cytotechnologist experience is preferred.
