Requirements
  • An Associate's degree in Respiratory Therapy from an accredited Respiratory Care program is required.
  • Successful completion of the Therapist Multiple-Choice Examination within 90 days of graduation is required.
  • Michigan state licensure must be acquired; Graduate Respiratory Therapist status remains until the license is granted.
  • Current Basic Life Support certification is required.
  • Satisfactory performance on the respiratory care medication competency test is required.
  • Completion of hospital, core, and department-specific orientation requirements is required.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and analyze data from computer systems and equipment to determine an appropriate plan of action is required.
  • Ability to communicate constantly, both verbally and in writing, and accurately record activities and treatments and communicate technical information and instructions to patients, families, and care team members is required.
  • Ability to meet the role's visual and mental demands, including sustained alertness and concentration and computer use for 40 to 70 percent of the time, is required.
  • Ability to regularly lift bulky or moderately heavy weights up to 50 pounds and occasionally assist with heavier tasks or exert comparable effort pushing, pulling, or handling materials and equipment is required.
Responsibilities
  • Perform routine respiratory care procedures according to established standards in general patient care areas and work under direct therapist supervision in adult, pediatric, and neonatal critical care units and the Emergency Department.
  • Demonstrate competencies specific to the patient population served.
  • Assess patients' respiratory status using basic assessment skills, including chart and monitor review and physical assessment.
  • Perform basic respiratory care procedures, including oxygen delivery and medication administration.
  • Assemble, check, and correct malfunctions associated with respiratory care equipment.
  • Under a licensed respiratory therapist's supervision, perform necessary measurements and calculations and assist in determining appropriate mechanical ventilation parameters.
  • Under a licensed respiratory therapist's supervision, perform emergency and acute respiratory care procedures.
  • Communicate appropriately and effectively with other healthcare team members regarding all aspects of patient care.
  • Regularly communicate with the shift charge therapist about activity in the assigned area and availability to assist other areas.
  • Participate in department performance improvement activities.
  • Assume responsibility for professional development.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience in an acute care setting is preferred.
