Requirements
  • U.S. citizenship is required.
  • Current Certified Medical Assistant certification from the American Association of Medical Assistants, American Registry of Medical Assistants, or another approved national or state accrediting body is required.
  • Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association or Red Cross is required.
  • Graduation from a medical assistant program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs, Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools, or a formal U.S. Armed Forces medical training program is required.
  • At least one year of post-graduate clinical and administrative experience within the past two years is required.
  • The worker must pass a tuberculosis test, background/security investigation, pre-employment drug screening, and physical examination.
  • The worker must comply with Defense Health Agency vaccination requirements and wear personal protective equipment during service delivery.
  • The worker must be able to walk, stand for long periods, stretch, crouch, bend, stoop, lift up to 50 pounds, and lift more than 50 pounds with assistance.
  • The worker must work around infectious diseases, toxic, hazardous, or irritating chemicals, carcinogenic materials, noxious fumes, flammable liquids, radiation, pathogenic bacteria, and electrical hazards.
  • The worker must maintain good personal hygiene and a well-groomed, professional appearance in accordance with the policy at the place of performance.
Responsibilities
  • Perform basic medical assistance procedures for patients.
  • Enter demographic data at patient check-in and enter diagnosis and departure time when patients are released.
  • Screen patients and obtain and document medical history, drug history, chief complaints, allergies, and vital signs.
  • Measure and record blood pressure, pulse, respirations, temperature, height, weight, intake, and output, and assemble needles and syringes.
  • Assist physicians, providers, nurses, and other healthcare staff with patient examinations and medical procedures.
  • Change dressings and bandages, draw blood, provide wound care, and apply or remove binders, simple dressings, casts, slings, and hot and cold packs.
  • Obtain pulse oximeter readings and notify the registered nurse of abnormal readings according to protocol.
  • Administer oxygen by mask or nasal prong.
  • Apply antiseptic solution for immunizations and skin testing.
  • Assist patients with walking, moving, and changing positions.
  • Assist with patient check-ins, screening, admissions, discharges, and transfers as directed.
  • Perform diagnostic procedures and schedule laboratory tests when ordered.
  • Prepare examination rooms before patient arrival and maintain room stock and routine room maintenance.
  • Complete laboratory and X-ray requisitions in accordance with clinic policies and physician orders.
  • Collect blood and other specimens.
  • Report changes in patient condition to medical staff.
  • Administer medications, including injections, under the supervision of licensed staff.
  • Explain treatment procedures, prepare patients for examinations, and instruct patients and families on procedures and immunization follow-up according to established protocols.
  • Sanitize and disinfect commonly used equipment; sterilize instruments and soiled equipment; and prepare patient rooms.
  • Maintain supply carts, clean and sort supplies, instruments, and equipment, report supply and equipment deficiencies, clean utility rooms, and handle linen according to infection-control policies.
  • Receive appointment requests by telephone, in person, or email.
  • Verify patient eligibility for treatment, including TRICARE enrollment, Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System checks, and identification cards, and verify insurance information.
  • Book, schedule, and reschedule appointments through referral or patient appointment systems.
  • Interview patients for appointments and refer them to other medical specialty clinics according to protocol.
  • Schedule patients with appropriate clinics and healthcare providers based on disposition, complaints, symptoms, or requested services.
  • Ensure provider-requested treatment is scheduled and coordinate scheduling to avoid conflicts among clinics and medical treatment facilities.
  • Explain appointment instructions and test preparation requirements to patients.
  • Refer patients to other clinics, specialty areas, or appropriate staff members as required.
  • Determine consultation actions, such as 72-hour, urgent, or routine processing.
  • Explain appointment procedures and criteria, medication refill procedures, and other general information.
  • Document and file patient information in clinical systems.
  • Arrange hospital admissions and laboratory services when required.
  • Obtain information needed to determine appropriate action under clinic policies and procedures.
  • Annotate patient reports, stamp forms, and provide patient records to nursing personnel.
  • Maintain records of patients seen by each healthcare provider.
  • Attempt to calm dissatisfied patients and resolve administrative complaints, referring unresolved complaints to the lead, charge registered nurse, department chief, or designated representative.
  • Operate automated data-processing and computer equipment to input, store, revise, and print appointment, provider schedule, and template data in clinical systems.
  • Review and maintain provider appointment logs and maintain provider schedules under the direction of the lead or charge registered nurse.
  • Welcome and greet patients and customers, receive telephone calls and visitors, identify the nature and urgency of requests, and obtain identifying information.
