Requirements
  • A valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License from a state-approving agency with Passenger, Air Brakes, and Hazardous Materials endorsements.
  • A Department of Transportation Medical Examiner’s Certificate.
  • Two years of commercial driving experience.
  • One year of technical experience in vehicle operation and maintenance.
  • No major accidents within the last three years.
  • Ability to work on campus as scheduled, travel occasionally to other locations and events, lift up to 50 pounds, operate trailer landing gear, secure loads, and perform frequent climbing, bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, crawling under vehicles, and tool handling.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather, noise, and heavy-equipment hazards while maintaining the dexterity, coordination, and endurance needed to demonstrate safe driving techniques.
  • Ability to complete federal Employment Eligibility Verification and provide acceptable original documents proving identity and authorization to work in the United States.
  • Successful completion of a criminal history background check.
Responsibilities
  • Deliver classroom and behind-the-wheel instruction to prepare students for Commercial Driver’s License examinations and endorsements.
  • Teach vehicle operation, pre-trip inspections, shifting techniques, coupling and uncoupling procedures, and defensive driving strategies.
  • Teach and reinforce state and federal regulations, including Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration guidelines, hours-of-service requirements, hazardous-materials handling, load securement, industry standards, and safety protocols.
  • Conduct skills assessments, written exams, and practical road tests; provide feedback and maintain records of student performance, attendance, and certification readiness.
  • Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections on training vehicles and maintain compliance with Department of Transportation regulations.
  • Address safety concerns and training-equipment deficiencies.
  • Maintain a safe learning environment, enforce safety protocols, conduct risk assessments, and follow training-site safety regulations.
  • Use real-world scenarios, simulation training, and updated industry methodologies to deliver instruction.
  • Improve course content and delivery to align with workforce demands.
  • Maintain training records, student progress reports, maintenance logs, and certification documentation in compliance with institutional, state, and federal requirements.
  • Communicate course expectations, policies, and testing requirements to students and respond to student inquiries.
  • Participate in curriculum development, discipline committee meetings, and program improvement initiatives.
  • Align training materials with industry advancements and workforce needs.
  • Maintain current CDL training standards and certification compliance, including required certifications and training obtained within six months of hire.
  • Travel to multiple training locations as required to provide consistent instruction and program delivery.
Desired Qualifications
  • Teaching or training experience, or demonstrated expertise conducting written and practical CDL examinations.
  • No major accidents within the last five years.
  • Knowledge of higher education and the workforce-development landscape.
  • Experience developing non-credit courses and curricula, including practical involvement in developing and implementing credit, non-credit, and short-term credit programs.
