Billings Flying Service

View

Billings Flying Service provides heavy-lift helicopter operations and maintenance with a focus on CH-47D Chinook aerial firefighting. It operates the world’s largest civilian-owned Chinook fleet and has specialized CH-47D operations since 2013, serving government contracts (USFS, CALFIRE, Montana DNRC) for firefighting, construction, and utilities. The company runs an FAA Part 145 MRO facility (2019) that services its fleet plus commercial and military customers, specializing in CH-47 drivetrain, dynamics, and hydraulics. In December 2025 BFS joined Quanta Services as the Quanta Aviation Services subsidiary, aiming to access greater resources while maintaining its leadership and culture, with a goal of providing reliable, mission-critical aerial support for public-safety and civil operations.

What believers are saying

  • Quanta said BFS adds about 180 employees and expands aviation capabilities in 2026.
  • VerticalMag reported three more Chinooks targeted for certification before the 2026 fire season.
  • BFS kept all contracts and locations after acquisition, preserving customer continuity into 2026.

What critics are saying

  • Wildfire revenue depends on government contracts; any 2026 renewal loss cuts utilization fast.
  • Chinook certification and upgrade schedules slip into 2026 fire season, grounding high-margin aircraft.
  • Quanta integration centralizes strategy; BFS autonomy ends when Quanta reallocates capital or leadership.

What makes Billings Flying Service unique

  • BFS runs Quanta Aviation’s civilian CH-47D Chinook firefighting fleet after December 9, 2025 acquisition.
  • Its Part 145 MRO specializes in CH-47 drivetrain, dynamics, and hydraulics, launched 2019.
  • BFS holds USFS, CALFIRE, and Montana DNRC contracts with nine Chinooks and backups.
